1. EARTH’S CHANGING SURFACE Today I can describe the role that water plays in erosion, deposition and weathering.

2. SLOW CHANGES The earth’s surface is constantly changing slowly by weathering. Physical Weathering: For example, mountains can rise where there was once flat land. (wind erosion) Physical Weathering: Rocks are changed into bits of sand and soil from wind, crashing waves, and freezing water. (wind and water erosion and temperature) Physical Weathering: Some changes happen so slowly, you may never see them (i.e. it took 6million years for the Colorodo River to carve the Grand Canyon). Physical Weathering: Plate Tectonics: the movement of plates under the earth’s surface. Chemical Weathering: acid rain and rust

3. FAST CHANGES The earth’s surface can also weather quickly. Storms can bring dangerous weather causing fast changes in the earth. For example: tornadoes, hurricanes, avalanche, earthquakes, etc.

4. VOCABULARY Weathering- the breaking down and wearing away of rocks into smaller pieces. water- minerals in rocks dissolve in water. Moving water carries rough pieces of sand that can chip rocks away. wind- contains sand and wears away rock. ice- liquid water collects in cracks in a rock. When the water freezes, it expands, pushes apart the rock, and breaks it. plants- sprout from the cracks in a rock. It’s roots spread inside the crack, and pushes it apart.

5. Vocabulary continued... Erosion- carries weathered materials away from a place (wind, water, glacier) Deposition- drops the materials in a new place. Erosion and deposition destroy old landforms and create new ones. Moving water, wind, and ice (from weathering) cause erosion and deposition.
