Weathering and Erosion

Weathering is… When rocks are broken apart and create sediments.

Sediments are… Small pieces of rock and minerals

Sediments can be as small as clay

Quiz your partner What does weathering create? Give examples of sediments.

Physical or Chemical Weathering Physical weathering is weathering by mechanical movement. Examples include ice freezing and thawing.

Water bottle What steps had to occur for this to happen?

Physical Weathering Other examples include roots growing into rocks.

Physical Weathering Water and wind can carry sand that breaks and smooths rocks.

Quiz your partner Give examples of physical weathering

Chemical Weathering Carbonic acid in rainwater dissolves rocks.

Chemical Weathering Oxidation or rusting. Oxygen combines with rocks containing iron and the rust fall off the rock.

Quiz your partner Give examples of chemical weathering

Erosion The process of sediment moving. Most erosion is caused by water being pulled by the force of gravity (rivers).

Erosion can be caused by ground water. The water wears away and moves the sediments so caves form.

Erosion can be caused by Glaciers they melt and the water flows down (gravity)

Erosion can be caused by Wind

Erosion can be caused by currents

Quiz your partner What causes erosion? Give examples. What is the major force behind erosion? What is the difference between erosion and weathering?

Deposition is.. When the sediments that are moved land and stay somewhere. Sand is deposited on a beach.

Layers of sediment form rocks

Sand gets deposited into bars/capes
