3. The 5 W’s  Who: American Citizens  What: A war between members of the same group or country  When: 1861-1865  Where: The United States of America  Why: Some states disagreed with the American Government about the issue of slavery & they wanted to be their own country.

4. 2 important facts  ½ Million people were killed or wounded in this war.  60% of the fighting took place in Virginia.

10. Important People  Abraham Lincoln: The President of the US during the time of the civil war. He wanted to abolish slavery.  Harriet Tubman: The creator of the underground railroad for the slaves to use to escape to the north.  Frederick Douglas: A well known abolitionist

11. Important People con’t…  Nat Turner: He lead a rebellion against plantation owners in 1831 and killed 60 people.  John Brown: A white man that lead a raid on Harper’s Ferry, Virginia in 1859 so that he could help free the slaves.

12. Important People con’t…  Jefferson Davis- An American statesman & advocate for slavery. He is most famous for serving as the only President of the Confederate States of America. He led the rebelling southern slave states to Civil War.

13. Differences Divide North and South The North  More factories  People began moving to the cities to work  Less people were farming  People from other countries moved to the North  Population grew rapidly to over 19 million PEOPLE!!!

14. The South  Farming remained the main way to earn a living Most were small one family farms Cut lumber, raised cattle, and raised just enough food for their own families Population was a lot smaller (11 million) than in the North (19 million)
