2 Unit 1006 Maintain and use carpentry and joinery power tools © Pearson Education 2010 Printing and photocopying permitted Important legislation ●The Provision and Use of Working Equipment Regulations 1998 – The regulations that deal with all power tools ●The Abrasive Wheels Regulations 1974 – the regulations that deal with tools that have an abrasive wheel such as a grinder ●The Protection of Eye Regulations 1974 – the regulations that deal with protection of eyes ●The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 – the regulations that deal with all work that is carried out.

3 Unit 1006 Maintain and use carpentry and joinery power tools © Pearson Education 2010 Printing and photocopying permitted General safety ●Only use tools if you are authorised and trained and wearing correct PPE ●Always select the correct tool and ensure it is in good condition. ●Use a compatible power supply ●Make sure plugs, wires, extension leads etc are in good condition ●Always use any safety guards correctly ●Never carry any tool by its lead. ●Disconnect tools when you have finished or before making adjustments ●Take precautions against electric shock

Using 230 V is not recommended as an electric shock from this can be fatal. Only tools using a supply of 110 V, reduced by a transformer, should be used on construction sites.

5 Unit 1006 Maintain and use carpentry and joinery power tools © Pearson Education 2010 Printing and photocopying permitted Portable Appliance Test (PAT) and maintenance PAT testing states “every employers shall ensure that work equipment is maintained in an efficient state, in efficient working order and in good repair”. Test must be carried out by a qualified person at regular intervals. Power tools should be cleaned regularly. Always check the instruction manual for storage guidance.
