Studying Sedimentary rocks Key words fosils fossil grains Sediment Lesson objectives - To know how sedimentary rocks are formed To know that fossils are found in sedimentary rock Starter Name a sedimentary rock What do you think a fossil is ?

Studying Sedimentary rocks Lesson objectives - To know how sedimentary rocks are formed To know that fossils are found in sedimentary rock Examine the three rock samples and describe their features- Limestone, sandstone and mudstone Complete your observations in a table key words - fossils sediments grains

Studying Sedimentary rocks http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Df4CtlZ0AQ 1.Why do sediments settle on the sea bed 2. What happens to the particles as they are squashed 3. What is cementation? 4. What is sandstone ? 5. 6. How is limestone formed ?

Studying Sedimentary rocks Cut up and place the paragraphs in the correct order These little bits of rock & sand these are called sediments. Sedimentary rock is formed when the sediments settle together and become a rock like sandstone, limestone or mudstone. Plants & animals that have died get covered up by new layers of sediment and are turned into stone. They just settled to the bottom. These remains are called fossils Over many years eroded and broken bits of the rock end up in the streams & rivers that flow down from the mountains Sedimentary rocks often have fossils in them. Sedimentary rocks are soft and contain grainsfossils

Studying Sedimentary rocks The photograph shows a piece of sandstone. (i)The sandstone in the photograph contains a fossil. What is a fossil? 1 mark (ii)What group of rocks does sandstone belong to ? 1 mark (iii) How could scientists use the evidence that fossils provide? Key words – Fossils sediments grains

Studying sedimentary rocks 1.Linda had a piece of red sandstone. She hammered it into pieces and then ground them into a powder using a pestle and mortar. (a) 2.She put the powder into a measuring cylinder with water and shook the mixture. The contents settled 3. What could Linda conclude from her experiment ? Key words Fossils sediments Grains

Studying sedimentary rocks Sandstone is a sedimentary rock. Four stages in the formation of sedimentary rock are listed below. They are not in the correct order. compacted deposited weathered transported Put these stages in the correct order. One has been done for you. stage 1................weathered................... stage 2..................................................... stage 3..................................................... stage 4..................................................... Lesson objectives - To know how sedimentary rocks are formed To know that fossils are found in sedimentary rock

Studying sedimentary rocks Learning outcomes- How well have you done ? Level 4 – Can you describe how sedimentary rocks are formed? Level 5 Can you describe how fossils are formed in sedimentary rock Lesson objectives - To know how sedimentary rocks are formed To know that fossils are found in sedimentary rock
