Calculation Policy Training for Parents 25 th February 2015

Itinerary Welcome Rationale for the Calculation Policy Statutory Changes for Curriculum 2014 How our children will calculate? Having a go!

Rationale for the Calculation Policy It is necessary to ensure consistency and progression of methods for calculation throughout the school. This guidance provides teachers with a clear path of progression in calculation, allowing them to help children progress and identify stages of progression that children are struggling with.

Rationale for the Calculation Policy The guidance is divided into Year groups with each stage showing the steps that children are expected to progress through to meet age expectations for calculations (National Curriculum 2014). We keep expectations high and are looking at above average progression throughout Foundation stage, Key Stage 1 and 2.

Rationale for the Calculation Policy This policy will ensure that children in Key Stage 1 are able to use a sensible means of representing their calculations through diagrams or number lines. As children move into Key stage 2, they will begin to use formal written methods to support their calculations. Children working at the end of Key Stage 2 will have been taught a compact standard method for each operation.

Statutory Changes for Curriculum 2014 Expectations have been raised for all year groups with Curriculum 2014 Column addition & subtraction in Year 4 Short multiplication in Year 5 Long Division in Year 6 No grid method or chunking division as formal written method. Children have to know 12x12 by the end of Year 4.

How our children will calculate? Addition

How our children will calculate? Subtraction

How our children will calculate? Multiplication

How our children will calculate? Division

Having a go! Now, the bit we have all been looking forward to. Having a go!

Addition Try using the policy to help you understand how to perform the following calculations. Reception - Year 1 - 13+8 = Year 2 - 43 + 32 = Year 3 - 57 + 32 = Year 4 - 645 + 219 = Year 5 - 12.35+ 9.24+2.01 =

Subtraction Reception - 9 – 4 = (with Numicon, objects) Year 1 - 9 – 4 = Year 2 - 38 – 26 = Year 3 - 65 – 24 = Year 4 - 353 – 231 = Year 5 - 324.9 – 27.7 =

Multiplication Reception - 5 x 4 = (use Numicon / objects) Year 1 - 5 x 4 = (using a number line) Year 2 - 5 x 4 = Year 3 - 6 x 8 = Year 4 - 134 x 4 = Year 5 - 64 x 36 =

Division Reception - 12 ÷ 3 = (using models and objects) Year 1 - 12 ÷ 3 = Year 2 - 15 ÷ 3 = Year 3 - 64 ÷ 8 = Year 4 - 105 ÷ 8 = Year 5 - 380 ÷ 17 =

What now? The policy will be available online at the school website www.talbot.leeds.sch.uk Use the policy to help your children with homework. Consistency is why we are implementing the policy. Help by using BBC Bitesize and Education City a little and often.

Thank You
