1 Academic Parent Teacher Teams APTT – Palm Beach County Building Capacity for Effective Family Engagement in Palm Beach County

2 Family Engagement – Palm Beach County - APTT  The APTT concept was presented at a Title I Principals’ Meeting in February, 2015  Interested principals submitted a mini-grant application to be considered for APTT implementation  Mini-grants were reviewed by a team of District leaders using a rubric  Eight (8) elementary schools were selected to implement this year 2

3 Family Engagement – Palm Beach County - APTT  Completed a Title I-funded consultant contract with WestEd  3 days of Professional Development were held in June  June 22 – Administrative Teams from all 8 schools received training  June 23 – Teachers from 4 schools received training  June 24 - Teachers from the other 4 schools received training  August 10 – Make Up Training Day – attended by 95 teachers! 3

4 It’s A Matter of Time 4 55% Away from school 12% School Based on 6 hours of instruction, 180 days per year, and 8 hours of sleep time. (School = 1,080 Hours) (Sleep = 2,920 Hours) (Away from school = 4,760 Hours) (Total Hours in a Year = 8,760)

5 Family Engagement Definition:  Family Engagement is parent-teacher collaboration to drive student learning and achievement. 5

7 APTT Model Objectives  Build the capacity of teachers to effectively engage families in student grade level learning goals.  Build the capacity of administrators to grow and sustain effective family engagement practices.  Build the capacity of families to effectively engage in supporting their child’s grade level learning goals.  Establish a systematic process for school and family partnerships aligned to school improvement goals.

9 National Dual Capacity-Building Framework 9 Linked to learning  Teachers as facilitators of family learning and engagement  Grade level learning goals and data as drivers of engagement  Families acquiring information, skills, and strategies from the classroom teacher (scaffolded instruction) Collaborative and Relational  Families in a classroom as a learning community  Families share expertise and strategies with other families in the classroom team  Grade level teachers as a planning team (PLC)  Grade level teachers, principal, and instructional coach determine grade level target skills using data Developmental  Capacity building (training and coaching) for administrators, teachers, and families Interactive  Active scaffolding ~ “I do, we do, you do” format  Families learn and practice together

11 What’s Next?  Data collection throughout the year  Expand the implementation for 2016-2017  No More Spaghetti Dinners! Using APTT to Partner with Families for Student Success - implementation in Palm Beach, Okeechobee, and Brevard Counties will be presented at the National Title I Conference in January, 2016  Invited to present APTT model to Education Faculty at local universities 11
