3 1. delivery: formality & best attributes of good conversation: directness, spontaneity, animation, vocal and facial expressiveness, and lively sense of communication. 2. art not science. 3. basically should avoiding distracting mannerism, establishing eye contact.

4 Methods of delivery Reading from a manuscript 1. definition: manuscript speech 2. talking instead of reading 3. 1) practice aloud to make sure the speech sounds natural 2) work on establishing eye contact 3) manuscript must be legible at a glance.

5 Reciting from memory: 1. for brief presentations or for prepared speeches in competitions 2. memorize it thoroughly, concentrate on communicating with the audience.

6 Speaking impromptu: 1. definition 2. say a few words 3. respond to the previous speaker: 1) state the points you are answering 2) state the point you wish to make 3) support your point with evidence and reasoning 4) summarize your point 5) signpost as 1 st, 2 nd, … in conclusion… 6) By practice CD V11.1CD V11.1

12 The introductory speech assignment due by Mar 21-23 & 15% of final score This is a 2.5-minute speech introducing yourself or a classmate. Your speech should explain some aspects of your (or your classmate’s) personality, background, beliefs, or aspirations. You need to write the speech in manuscript form. Try to express yourself clearly and concisely. Organize your ideas clearly. Proofread the manuscript carefully to eliminate errors in spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc. If you begin your speech with an object( eg. a book, a picture, a pair of shoes etc), use it only as a starting point to explain something of consequence about yourself ( or your classmate). The more creative your speech, the more successful it is likely to be. Create a title for your speech. Make sure your speech has an introduction, body, and conclusion.
