2 Background :  Born in Augusta, Georgia in 1930  Grew up wanting to be an artist  Was drafted and stationed in Japan  Returned to study at the University of South Carolina, Columbia between 1949-51  From 1952-58 worked in NY bookshop and as a commercial artist

3  In New York, met and was influenced by John Cage (composer), Merce Cunningham (choreographer), and Robert Rauschenberg.  Visited Philadelphia to see work by Duchamp  Inspired by a dream to paint the flag

6 “Johns' early work combined a serious concern for the craft of painting with an everyday, almost absurd, subject matter. The meaning of the painting could be found in the painting process itself.
