3 Context National and county imperative to raise the proportion of students opting for mathematics post-16 and the subsequent retention; A need to address the perception of mathematics amongst current and potential students; To support the learning needs of a broader spectrum of students opting for mathematics post-16.

4 Aims of the project in Cornwall To increase the interactivity and engagement of A Level teaching and to promote the highest possible standards of teaching and learning in post-16 mathematics; To build the capacity to sustain further development; To develop further materials that extend the approaches across most of the AS and A2 curriculum.

5 Success Criteria The styles of teaching and the types of resources and approaches used addresses much more acutely the needs of all learners of mathematics at post- 16; An improvement in the recruitment, retention and achievement of students studying mathematics at post-16 in Cornwall, including among those pupils who would like to study Further Mathematics.

9 Project methodology 30 Nov 06: Session 1 : Launch of project –Showcase’ of resources and ideas and initial support for coaching. –Each institution to receive a ‘Standards Unit box’. –NCETM ‘private community’ established.

10 Project methodology Between session 1 and session 2: –Schools and colleges develop, prepare, teach and review lessons and/or sequences of lessons; –Teachers use peer coaching model to support each other with input and additional support as needed by project leaders; –Post resources etc prepared by the group onto NCETM community. Use community as a discussion and ‘sharing’ forum;

11 Overview 30 November 2006 (The Stable - Pondhu) Rationale and methodology, Explore materials and approaches Decide on topic areas for schools/colleges to trial. 7 March 2007 Review experiences from lessons taught between sessions 1 and 2, Develop further materials and evaluate progress, both in using the T&L and coaching approaches, Roll out more widely in participating schools. 21 June 2007 Continue to develop suite of resources Review the pilot project and decide on next steps – begin to plan county-wide INSET day (Aut 07)

16 On-line Support We would like to establish on-line support / forum / repository for resources for participants, by using a ‘private community’ on the NCETM website. To set this up, everyone will need to register with the website – once this is done, we will set up the community.
