5 Resources for all stages Country Reports  Department of health of country  International agency reports of country system Developing Countries: World Bank, Regional Developing Agencies (e.g. PAHO), World Health Organization (WHO)  World Bank E-library (under W in find articles and more on library website)  Country Health Projects at World Bank.  www.worldbank.org, then choose countries, can get to a lot of reports from here. www.worldbank.org

7 Stage 1: Performance of the Health Care Sector Objective: Use health data to report on the performance of the health care system. At a minimum examine:  Expenditures  Morbidity  Mortality  Health care resources  And all sorts of other aspects that may be pertinent for your country Max 4 double spaced pages  This does not include your tables and references.

8 Stage 1: Performance of the Health Care Sector Compare data on your country to:  The average for countries in your region  The average for countries in income bracket www.worldbank.org/data/countryclass/classgro ups.htm  It is possible to do this automatically with some databases (e.g. WDI)

9 Stage 1: Performance of the Health Care Sector Where possible look at trends.  How have statistics changed over the decades for your country and comparison countries This is hard depending on indicator and country Must you one of the three suggested data sources. Tables:  Must be formatted in exactly the same way and that fonts are big enough to read.  Source must be provided for each table

10 Stage 1: Data Sources Use your library website  Find Articles and More on Library Website. You must download and use the data sources listed below. Data taken from papers can be used as supplementary but should not be your main data source.

12 Stage 1: Data Sources 2.WHO  More indicators on health  The database is called WHOSISWHOSIS  You connect to it via the class website Hit the WHO link on the class website. Choose WHOSIS 3.Source OECD  Access through library or class website  Click on the statistics tab at top of page  On left of screen click, click OECD databases, choose health

14 Stage 2: What is expected Executive summary describing your country’s health care system.  Maximum 8 pages double spaced plus a bibliography.  At least 3 references should be in your bibliography. What is a bibliography?  List all the materials you have consulted in preparing your assignment, whether or not your actually cited them in your assignment.  Note this differs from just giving a list of reference. This would be just a list of materials you actually cited in your assignment.

15 Stage 2: What is expected Description of the health system  History: when did the health system first started and what precipitated it or other interesting historical information.  Coverage: is there universal coverage?  Funding: How is the health care system funded? Through taxes? Are there co-pays, user fees? How does the insurance system work? Is it government financed, privately financed or through a third party? Does this differ by state? What about those who can’t afford health care who pays for their health care?

16 Stage 2: What is expected Provision:  Is it privately or publically provided? In some countries there are private hospitals even if the government pays the bills  How are doctors or hospital etc. reimbursed for their services. Paid a salary, fee-for-service, per person

17 Stage 2: What is expected Coverage:  What kind of health services are covered by the government system or the insurance?  Are drugs covered, what types of drugs are covered etc. Well written: I’m grading you on your writing, spelling, grammar etc. Well structured: I want to see that you have structured your paper in an easy to read way. You may use subtitles or section headings if that makes it easier to read.

18 Group Project Objective: Your group will teach a class on your topic. Deliverables are  Paper on your topic Will act as class notes. Should be written in a paper style though with references included. Must be emailed to me two days before you have to teach the class. Make sure the paper is integrated and not like 4 different people wrote it.

19 Group Presentations  Presentation Each member must present and you should make sure you each present for approximately the same amount of time Make sure the presentation is smooth and doesn’t look like 4 separate presentations.  Office meeting with me Come prepared. I expect you have done your research. Come with an outline and a few bullet points under each theme. The point of the meeting is for me to make sure you are on track and discuss what you want to say. I will provide help where needed.

20 Group Presentations Participation Points  Group participation points This is given to you by your other team members  Class participation points If you miss more than one group presentation you will get a zero for this component as per syllabus. You must each hand in two questions at the beginning of class.
