Ch. 3 Notes Models of the Earth

Latitude Run east and west (left and right) 90° above equator, 90° below equator Equator is at 0°

Latitude A degrees is divided into 60 minutes (’) and minutes are divided into 60 seconds (”) Helps determine a precise location Like a precise time—3 hours, 2 minutes, 43 seconds Washington, D.C., is located at 38°53’23”N N is for north of equator

Longitude Run north and south (up and down) Longitude hint: Think long person! Prime meridian is 0° longitude Located in Greenwich, England Also International Date Line

Longitude 180° east of prime meridian, 180° west of prime meridian Like latitude, for longitude a degree is dividing into 60 minutes and 60 seconds Washington, D.C. is 77°00’33”W W means west of prime meridian D.C’s full location is 38°53’23”N, 77°00’33”W

EXTRA CREDIT! Determine the latitude and longitude of your house HINT: Use the Internet! Google Maps, maybe? Include the degrees, minutes, seconds Turn in tomorrow on piece of paper with your name, address, and latitude /longitude!

Remote Sensing Satellites or airplanes capture images of Earth to help develop maps Google Earth! NASA Maps can display other info, like temperature, moisture, plant life, etc. Video – What is Remote Sensing? What is Remote Sensing? What is Remote Sensing? Grand Canyon image from Landsat 7

Parts of Map Direction Usually shown by a compass indicating N, S, E, W Legend Indicates different symbols on map, what they stand for

Parts of Map Map Scale Shows relationship between distance on map and actual distance Ex. 1 inch = 1 mile

Different Types of Maps Geologic maps Regular maps that are color-coded to show different types of rock in the area Soil maps Regular maps that are color-coded to show different types of soil in that area Helpful for agriculture!

Topographic Map Show elevation, height above sea level Each line (contour interval) below represents another 10 meters in height as you move toward middle Video – Topographic Maps Topographic MapsTopographic Maps
