Substance abuse has the following ill effects: Substances can cause addiction and can seriously harm the body. They can even cause death. 9 Lesson 3 Legal Consequences of Substance Use The legal consequences of substance use are: It is illegal for people under 21 to purchase, possess, or consume alcohol. People under 18 cannot purchase tobacco. The purchase and use of other drugs are illegal for all people. Abstaining from Risk Behaviors

10 Lesson 3 Abstaining from Sexual Activity Abstinence from sexual activity protects teens against many negative consequences. Teens who abstain from sexual activity: Never have to worry about unplanned pregnancy. Will not be faced with the difficult decisions associated with unplanned pregnancy. Will not have to take on the many responsibilities of caring for a child. Abstaining from Risk Behaviors
