June ‘til October Unit 1a – Inorganic Chemistry: Unit Test October ‘til December Unit 1b - Physical Chemistry : Unit Test June ‘til Easter Unit 2 - Researching Chemistry : Unit Test Probably in April Project Report: Worth 30 from 130 marks ( about 23%) January/February – Prelims February ‘til Easter Unit 3 – Organic Chemistry and Instrumental Analysis: Unit Test Recommended entry ♦ Higher Chemistry Course or relevant component Units What’s in the Advanced Higher?

August ‘til October Unit 1a – Inorganic Chemistry: Unit Test October Key Areas: Electromagnetic radiation and atomic spectra Atomic orbitals, electronic configurations and the Periodic Table Transition metals How will we learn it?  Learning Outcomes and Glossary.  Booklets – For each key area  Jotters – Notes taken from powerpoints, and experimental reports. Notes are in  Homeworks – Past papers etc on weblink  Tutorials – Available on weblink  Labbooks – experiments written up in labbook for SQA assessment.  Group tasks, posters, whiteboards etc for revision. What’s in the Advanced Higher?

October ‘til Christmas Unit 1b - Physical Chemistry : Unit Test December Key Areas: Chemical equilibrium Reaction feasibility Kinetics What’s in the Advanced Higher?

January/February – Prelims February ‘til Easter Unit 3 – Organic Chemistry and Instrumental Analysis: Unit Test March Key Areas: Molecular orbitals Molecular structure Stereo chemistry Synthesis Experimental determination of structure What’s in the Advanced Higher?

June ‘til Easter Unit 3 - Researching Chemistry : Unit Test Probably in April. Project Report: Worth 30 from 130 marks ( about 23%) Key Areas Gravimetric analysis Volumetric analysis Practical skills and techniques Stoichiometric calculations How will we learn it?  Lab book – Logbook for research and experiment. Individual research and experiments recorded for unit pass.  Group Experiments – 5 ‘must do’ practicals. Results taken and properly recorded to learn techniques for the unit test.  Project Report – Sent away to be marked by SQA. What’s in the Advanced Higher?

Practicals for Researching Chemistry  Prepare a standard solution of 0.1 mol l –1 oxalic acid  Determination of Ni 2+ in a nickel(II) salt  Colorimetric determination of manganese in steel  Hydrolysis of ethyl benzoate  Preparation of cyclohexene from cyclohexanol These are the ‘must do’ practicals, but we will hopefully manage lots of others!! What’s in the Advanced Higher?
