4. ALLEGORY: THE GREAT PURGE The Great Purge = The Great Purge A political term referring to a state or party trying to rid itself of disloyal elements, by killing or jailing the non-faithful. Stalin’s purge of the 1930s went beyond any purges ever seen. When his terror tactics were over, Russia was a terrified country and Stalin was its unchallengeable master. In Animal Farm, animals are seized without warning, for no apparent cause and forced to confess, implicating others.
