THE INSULIN PUMP INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGIES

WHAT IS AN INSULIN PUMP? Machine delivery of insulin. Most commonly for those with Type one diabetes

HOW DOES IT WORK? The insulin is housed inside the pump in a little cartridge called a “reservoir”. Insulin travels into the body through a flexible tube that ends with a tiny needle called a “Cannula” inserted just under the skin. The needle is held in place by an “infusion set,” a little adhesive patch stuck to your skin.

WHAT MAKES IT AN INNOVATION? Injection Management system Pump Management system  4-6 injections daily.  Delivers 0.5 or 1 unit increments.  Patient must calculate everything. Higher risk of error.  1 injection every 3 days.  Delivers 0.1 unit increments.  Pump has inbuilt calculator which stores patients information.

WHAT MAKES IT AN INNOVATION? Healthy pancreas Conventional injection therapy Intensive injection therapyPump therapy

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF THE TECHNOLOGY Pros  Maintain tighter blood sugar control.  Meal flexibility.  Accuracy.  Immediate insulin infusion and less risk of hypoglycaemia. Cons  Weight gain.  Expensive.  Attached to the pump constantly- inconvienience.
