3 What are the Emory Procedures? All NIH research must be routed through Emory.All NIH research must be routed through Emory. 4 THE MOU A signed MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) with proposed effort must accompany each proposal.A signed MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) with proposed effort must accompany each proposal. –NIH Policy Statement: “A signed agreement between VA and the University must be in place at the time of funding” –A new MOU should also be prepared by November 1 st of each year, even if effort has not changed.

7 Can 8/8 th ’s faculty do research? YESYES There are two ways an 8/8 th faculty member can conduct research:There are two ways an 8/8 th faculty member can conduct research: –Allowed release time during their 40 hour commitment (must be clearly shown on MOU) –Do the research in addition to the 40 hour VA commitment (they are allowed to do up to 20 additional hours)

8 Compensation for Research Effort Individuals with Joint university and VA appointments may request the university’s share of their salary in proportion to the effort devoted to the research project. 12 Animal Research The VA and Emory have independent IACUCs for all oversight of animal research.
