2 Job Description Vets diagnose and treat diseases and dysfunctions of animals. Vets that work to food animals or horses usually drive to ranches or farms to provide vet services for herds or individual animals. Vets working in research use sophisticated lab equipment.

3 Education and Training
Vets must graduate with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from a 4-year program at an accredited college of veterinary medicine. Applicants without a degree have a difficult task in gaining admittance. Most vet medical colleges also require some courses such as: English or literature, other humanities, and the social sciences.

4 Salary The average salary for vets in the Federal Government was $93,398 in March 2008. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $46,610. The highest 10 percent earned more than $143,660. 5 Job Outlook Vet employment are expected to increase 33% over the decade. More pet take advantage of nontraditional vet services such as: cancer treatment and preventive dental care. New graduates continue to be attracted to companion-animal medicine because they usually prefer to deal with pets and to live and work near heavily populated areas, where most pet owners live.
