2 What do they do? The job of the veterinary technician is to take care of technical tasks, so the veterinarian can focus on his or her job The tasks vet techs often take on include drawing blood, placing catheters, assisting in surgery, managing anesthesia, and giving medications.

3 Earnings Average of $29,710 a year Salary can increase if the Vet Tech is certified or registered. Can also increase by where the Vet Tech is working. For example: if the person I working in California or New York the pay will be higher because of the area and of how many people there are and how many people have animals.

4 Training and Other Qualifications In order to be a Vet Tech you have to have a two year Associates degree. After that you can qualify for a 4- year program at a Pre-Vet school. You can be a Certified Veterinary Assistant. To get paid more you can become a vet. Small animal exclusive vets started out with the highest average earnings of $64,744. Large animal exclusive vets started at $62,424. Mixed practice vets (large and small animal) started at $58,522. Equine vets started at $41,636.

6 Nature of Work Things a Vet Tech would do daily: ◦ Give shots (draw blood and give medications) ◦ Assist in surgeries ◦ Diagnose an animal ◦ Place a catheter ◦ Manage amesthesia

7 Working Hours Vet Techs may be required to work on holidays and on weekends, but other than that they would work an average 5 days a week. They would be working in an office, operating rooms, and the kennel areas.

8 How many? There are approximately 80,200 Veterinary Technicians. The field is expected to grow about 52% with the growing population and since people are willing to pay the money for he care of the animals. Related occupations are Veterinarians, medical and clinical technologists and technicians, and veterinary technology.

9 Personal Advantages and Disadvantages AdvantagesDisadvantages Get to work with exotic animals while in schooling. Get to learn more about animals so I can help other peoples animals and my own. I am good with animals and care for them. I get to work with things I love. Have to possibly work Holidays and weekends. Don’t get a super high pay. Can be stressful being bossed around.

10 Why? I love animals I love helping them. I want to be able to know more about exotic animals.

11 How am I preparing myself? I am going on college visits and researching colleges.
