George Mason University Design Team Tsehaye Habteselasie Jennifer Okezie Meredith Riddile Aanal Sheth Evaluation of LIPs Online: Designing the Perfect Fit

Presentation Overview Project Description Evaluation Process Final Product Lessons Learned

Project Goals Enhance the sharing of Local Improvement Plans (LIPs) Develop a standard appearance for LIPs Create a system that will require little to no support Create a system that will allow users to archive old LIPs Community of Practice

New System

New Features Users of this system will be able to: use new standard Microsoft Word templates create a new LIP edit LIPs online request approval from VDOE publish LIPs print LIPs

New Templates Standard template Cut and paste information online

Evaluation Process Evaluation Activity Expert Reviews Analyze & Redesign 1 Usability Testing Survey Analyze & Redesign 2 Client Visit Analyze & Redesign 3

User Reactions

Client Visit Presented to Dr. Patricia Abrams and secondary users Technical Assistants (TAs) Presented the following –introduced our project goals –demonstrated new features –explained our development process –allowed time for individual exploration of the system

Overall client and TAs were pleased with the system Taskbars help users to know where they are in the system. Easier than current process! Taskbars help navigation. Well organized and standardized. Client Reactions

Suggestions and Recommendations –provide sample of a LIP –provide contact information for users to receive help from T/TAC Online administrator –provide tracking system to track site visits Client Reactions

Final Touches Redesign list to programmer Instructional manual for new users

Final Product Enables users to create LIPs easily so plans and outcomes can be shared throughout the state

Final Product User-centered & performance-centered –Less cognitive burden on the users Object-oriented vs. action-oriented Database driven

What is the overall process? By providing taskbars, users are able to see all the steps in context.

What are the different features? Features are clearly labeled for all users to see. Features that are available to user are displayed.

Create a LIP Taskbar shows all sections of the LIP and what is required of the user. Document becomes a “web document” and not a document transferred to the web.

Edit a LIP Shows entire document and allows user to see each section as a component part. Allows for easy cascading between entire document and individual sections.

Create a Report progress or evaluation Consistent buttons, layout, taskbars, features, etc. as “Create New” and “Edit” features.

Request Approval from a regional VDOE Technical Assistant E-mail feature presented similar as other e-mail features found online.

Print Allows users to easily print documents. Template and web-format documents will look similar when printed.

Publish Makes documents available online for everyone to view. Provides similar checkboxes and accept buttons as online agreements.

Most Valuable Lesson Use evaluation as an opportunity to ensure system matches users’ needs, task at-hand, and provides just enough information
