1 AREA Science Park Laura Ramacci Cluster Manager
Good afternoon. I’m Pierpaolo De Pazzi, I work in the Scientific Park Development and Customer Care Unit of AREA Science Park Consortium. In my presentation I’m going to adress you some information about figures, clusters and results of the Park, and some short examples of the promotional support that we are offering to AREA’s Laboratories. Laura Ramacci Cluster Manager Scientific Park Development and Customer Care Tenants Management Department

2 AREA Science Park 71 knowledge-based companies 15 R&D centres
3 Campus: Padriciano, Basovizza, Gorizia 71 knowledge-based companies 15 R&D centres Millions Euro aggregate turnover (pro quota) 2400 Researchers and staff And now some figures. We have 4 campuses. Two, Padriciano and basovizza here, in Trieste, one in Gorizia (by the end of 2008), directly run by the Consorzio, and one in Pordenone, in the western part of the region. In this one we take part in the Board of directors, to help them to develop their activities in a district full of enterpises. We number more than 80 laboratories, 70 private companies and 15 R&D centres. Since they pay, to stay here, we call them Tenants. They achieve 180 millions euro of aggregate turnover. In case of a laboratory that is part of a bigger enterpise, as for example the AROMALAB of IllyCaffè group, the turnover is counted pro-quota. This means that we divide the total turnover of the enterpise by the number of emplyes working in AREA Laboratory, to come to the pro-quota turnover. AREA è: Ente di ricerca - Parco Scientifico e Tecnologico

3 Science and Technology Park
established in 1978 Padriciano Campus Basovizza Campus AREA Science park was estabilished in 1978, and so it is the older science and technology park in Italy. The park brings together, from the start, Science and Technology, fundamental, basic research and applied research, as well as research and development . We have now two big campuses, one here and the other in Basovizza, few kilometers away from here, that hosts ELETTRA, a modern Synchrotron Light Laboratory, specialised in the science of matter. It’s the bigger in Italy and was built in the ninenties.

5 Becoming a tenant of AREA Science Park
WHO Companies even those not yet established Public and private research institutions R&D labs of industrial companies They have to carry out programs or works related to technology development or, in general, research studies in high-tech sectors And now some figures. We have 4 campuses. Two, Padriciano and basovizza here, in Trieste, one in Gorizia (by the end of 2008), directly run by the Consorzio, and one in Pordenone, in the western part of the region. 6 Becoming a tenant of AREA Science Park
HOW Submission of a formal request accompanied by a business plan using a standard form. The Business Plan will be evaluated on three different levels: Technical-scientific evaluation Economic-legal investigation Technical-logistical analisys And now some figures. We have 4 campuses. Two, Padriciano and basovizza here, in Trieste, one in Gorizia (by the end of 2008), directly run by the Consorzio, and one in Pordenone, in the western part of the region. 7 Evaluation of tenant application
Three levels: Technical Scientific Evaluation: evaluation of the plan activity concerning the technical merit of the initiative and originality of the project. It is carried out by external experts Economic-legal investigation: examination of the economic and financial plan of the project in order to express an evaluation on the correctness of the methodology of the paln and conformity of historical data. Acquisition of information on the legal nature of the candidate Analysis of technical and logistical requirements: candidate needs are collected and feasibility checks carried out for spaces, facilities, services, safety and environment, customization of structures, IT and telecommunications requirements And now some figures. We have 4 campuses. Two, Padriciano and basovizza here, in Trieste, one in Gorizia (by the end of 2008), directly run by the Consorzio, and one in Pordenone, in the western part of the region.

8 Evaluation of tenant application
Basic requirements for evaluating tenant programs are: Consistency with development strategy of AREA Compatibility of business with AREA spaces and environment Technical and Scientific value of the R&D project Originality of the project and contribution of expected results to scientific knowledge of sector Economic and financial evaluation of historic data Economic and financial evaluation of Business Plan Industrial and market prospects And now some figures. We have 4 campuses. Two, Padriciano and basovizza here, in Trieste, one in Gorizia (by the end of 2008), directly run by the Consorzio, and one in Pordenone, in the western part of the region. 9 AREA Science Park a knowledge cluster with multidisciplinary features
Biotechnologies and Diagnostics Biomedical Technologies Physics New Materials Nanotechnologies ICT Electronics Energy and Environmental Technologies AREA Science Park is a multidisciplinary park. The fields of activity are Life Sciences (medicine, Biotech and Diagnostic, nutrition), Physics, new materials and nanotechnologies, strong sector for the fact that in Basovizza Campus we have a Sincrotron Light Laboratory, ICT and Eletronics, and Energy and Environment cluster that is rapidly growing. Qualified Services

10 Tenants’ growth In this slide you can estimate tenant’s grouth, starting from the eighties, with a rapid growth factor in the ninenties and the beginning of the Century, and a stabilization in the last years. Of course we’re tryng to fill all our buildings, with research and development centers of a growing quality. In fact, we’re continuosly controlling and assessing the activities of the laboratories, so they must maintain their research and entrepreneurial standard. For this reason, we have a considerable tenants rate of replacement, even if their total number remains the same.

11 Cluster’s figures (2011) Physics,Materials,Nanotechnology
Life Sciences Employees Employees Tenants 11 5 research centres (CNR, INFN, Elettra Synchrotron Light Laboratory…) Tenants 22 5 Research Centres 9 SME 8 Lab of Enterprises 6 SME Total Turnover Total Turnover ICT, Electronics,Telecommunication Energy and Environment Employees Employees And these are some numbers about the clusters. In brief, Phisics is the larger cluster, in terms of number of employes. Life sciences is the bigger in terms of total turnover, and the second in terms of employes. ICT end electronics is the biggest in terms of number of tenants, so the enterpises are quite small, employing on the average 8 researchers. Energy and Environment is a growing cluster. Tenants SME Tenants Total Turnover Total Turnover - 6 -

12 Cluster’s growth

13 Cluster’s employment Phisics…and Life Sciences employe over 70% the global employment of the Science Park thanks to some important research centre as Elettra Syncrotron Light Laboratory and International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotecnology.

14 Cluster’s turnover

15 Cluster’s employment vs turnover
This slide shows very clearly wich clusters are market sustained, and which ones need a public sustain to continue to develop fundamental research. Even if public help is very important in the field of energy and environment, probably the possibility to grow for this cluster is linked to the capacity of reaching the market.

20 Networking events for connecting people
AREA Science Park: some developing activities Business Day: a B2B event where tenants meet companies and organizations coming from Italy and from abroad 3l/3t Catalogue: a list of technologies and products selected by the 3L/3T ‘paradigm’ And now, i’m going to continue with some slides about promotional services and activities. I’ll begin with the Business Day, some kind of an Innovation Trade Fair, in wich AREA companies meet guest businessmen. Then I’ll continue presenting the Innovative Products Catalogue 3L/3T, where the newest AREA products and technologies are assigned to three categories. Finally, I’ll show you in brief some award winner products, chosen among the winners of the last edition of the 3 Levels prize. Innovation 3L/3T award Networking events for connecting people

21 Business Day Since 2008, AREA Science Park organizes an yearly convention dedicated to “one to one” business meetings, between AREA’s tenants and businessmen, managers and operators from Italy and abroad The third annual Business Day took place on 29 October 2010

22 Business Day: The technological offer from AREA
The «matching-event» is multi-sectoral , to foster Open Innovation and Trans-Sectoral Technology Transfers AREA’s most innovative companies meet businessmen interested either in their know-how or in the technology and products offered Business Day presents technology and products at different stages of development, with a strong potential impact on the market

23 Business Day: the On-Line Catalogue
So we made an On Line catalogue. Technological and scientific offers of AREA Science Park are divided - and searchable – into different sectors and field of activity The Catalogue is also searchable by Keywords, and by the kind of collaboration sought The On-Line Catalogue helps to ensure the best matching between AREA S.P. companies and guest businessman

24 Business Day Guests Businessmen Spin Off to-be and Start Up
Business Angels and Venture Capitalists Researchers, coming both from Industry and Public Research Bodies Spin Off to-be and Start Up, willing to settle in the Science Park or within its First-Mile Incubator, Innovaction Factory Business Angels and Venture Capitalists, looking for: - innovative products, possibly yet to be industrialised; - avant-garde technology, not only in their starting field; - results from research with massive market potential.

27 2008-2012 INNOVATION 3L/3T: AREA Science Park Results
Three annual products catalogues 56 (2008 ed.), 30 (2009 ed.) and 32 (2012) products classified under three levels of innovation (3L) and possible targets (3T) And now, i’m going to end my presentation with some slides about the Innovative Products Catalogue 3L/3T, where the newest AREA products and technologies are assigned to three categories. We printed two annual products catalogues presenting the range of innovative AREA Science Park results. Unfortunately, they’re printed only in Italian. But now we are working for the third catalogue, with the best 2011 products , and this will be a bilingual edition, in Italian and English too. So, we’ll bring the catalogue to you, with a little help from Fabrizia.

28 This is a picture, drawn by our past President Giancarlo Michellone, to explain three different levels, stages, of the link between research and the market

29 3L/3T: 3 different targets
Effects on 3T: Territory (Italy and in particular, Friuli Venezia Giulia) Trieste (and, by extension, the communities, enterpises and public bodies of the Territory) You (the individual citizen) – in Italian Tu. The 3T are not passive subjects in terms of innovation. On the contrary, they can be key issues in the success of a new product, thanks to their contribution in the early stages or by acting as test-subjects before the launch on the market.

30 3L/3T: AREA’s goal focus technological research on results
anticipate research and industry links communicate results to the Targets – Stakeholders, to obtain their contribution (The Municipality, Our Region, The Italian State)

31 3L/3T Award: AREA’s best products
Three editions, 2009, 2010 and 2012 External Evaluation Committee 3 prizes for each Level: Early Birds, To Be and In the Market products Not-Cash Prizes We have had already Two editions, 2009 and 2010, respectively for 2008 and 2009 products The panel has been an External Evaluation Committee, a group of Science, Technology and Industry specialist 3 prizes for each Level: Early Bird, To Be and In the Market products Not-Cash Prizes: best products need publicity and sales promotion with the mass media System, rather of a small amount of money
