1 WELCOME TO 3 rd, 4 th, 5 th Advanced ELA OPEN HOUSE!

3  1 Unit Per Quarter – Specific Theme  Purposefully designed to Start With The End In Mind  Standards aligned, including a variety of assessments used to inform instruction and assess mastery  Parallels general classroom curriculum Unit Design: What Parents Should Know

4  1 st Quarter Novels  3 rd grade will be reading Ramona Quimby, Age 8 and Freaky Fast Frankie Joe.  4 th grade will be reading The Orphan of Ellis Island and Esperanza Rising.  5 th grade will be reading Sign of the Beaver and Counting by 7s.  Underlined texts are featured in the general classroom and Italicized texts are for Advanced ELA. 5  Pacing  General classroom novels will be read in a 1-2 week timeline.  Advanced ELA novels will be read in a 2-3 week timeline.  Projects  Students will be exposed to more project and research based learning opportunities.  Calendars and due dates will be provided to students. 6 All students at Chelsea will participate in a Writer’s Workshop. The focus will be on explicit instruction in writing daily. Our goal is to develop a love of writing in all of our students. *Thank you in advance for having the Writer’s Notebook ready for class tomorrow. Writer’s Workshop

7 Writer’s Workshop (continued) Daily mini lessons and writing in class Students will have a writing binder and journal where all their writing will be kept for the year Writing units will vary by grade level, but will follow the general classroom curriculum.

8 Welcome to Genius Hour!

9  Students get to chose exactly what they want to learn about, but it must be approved by us.  Students’ projects must be research based.  Students are required to make a project (digital, model, presentation, video, book, etc.). Materials are provided by students.  Students are required to share their project with the class.  Presentation times will be given regardless of the students progress. Genius Guidelines

10  During this time, students will be researching to develop their Passion Projects.  Genius Hour is a privilege granted to Advanced ELA students, therefore, all classroom requirements must be met in advance.  Please see the handout for more information. Genius Hour

11  Remind 101 is a safe, private text message reminder for parents of our classroom.  Make sure to grab a magnet on your way out and enroll in our classroom. Remind 101

12  MISSION: Raising funds throughout the year to fulfill teacher written grants for the classroom.
