2 Words industrialization- to change a country or group to manufacturing instead of agriculture as the main economic activity. textiles- cloth or fabric that is woven, knitted, or otherwise manufactured productivity- the amount of goods or services that result for time spent and labor used. interchangeable parts- parts that can be swapped for one another in the assembling of a product, because they have been precisely cut and shaped to be identical

3 Words domestic system- a pre-industrial system of manufacturing in which workers crafted products in their homes using raw materials supplied by merchants factory system- an industrial system of manufacturing in which workers, raw materials, and machinery are gathered under the same roof mass production- the manufacturing of goods in large quantities, often using standardized designs and assembly-line techniques

4 Words capitalism- an economic system based on the private ownership of the means of production and distribution of goods, characterized by a free competitive market and motivated by profit monopoly- complete control by one firm of the production and/or the supply of a good urbanization- to make an area of a countryside into a town or city

5 People Adam Smith- author of The Wealth of Nations, published in Believed that because producers wanted profit, they created goods and that the government should not interfere in this process. Jethro Tull- famous inventor of agricultural machinery, i.e., seed drill

6 Words sweatshops- a small factory or other establishment where employees are made to work very hard in poor conditions for low wages labor union- an organization formed by workers to represent them in negotiations with employers concerning employment issues strike- an agreement among workers to stop working in order to force an employer to improve wages, hours, benefits, or working conditions
