4 Is a way to influence the lawmaking process by convincing lawmakers to vote as you want them to. Lobbying When a legislative act is referred to voters for final approval or rejection. Referendum Is the active support of a cause. Advocacy Allow voters to remove elected officials from office. Recall Is a procedure that enables a specified number of voters to propose a law by petition. Initiative Is the process by which people involved in a dispute discuss their problem and try to reach a solution acceptable to all. Negotiation Attorneys can have prospective jurors removed without stating a cause. Peremptory Challenges

5 Judges who disagree with the majority opinion may issue this kind of opinion. Dissenting Opinion When a third party helps the disputing parties talk about their problem and settle their differences, but the decision is not binding or imposed upon the parties. Mediation An agreement before the case goes to trial. Settlement Both parties to a dispute agree to have one or more persons listen to their arguments and make a decision for them, and it is binding. Arbitration The judge is active in questioning witnesses and controlling the court process, including the gathering and presenting of evidence. Inquisitional System
