2 Requirements & Course Description ESL 54 or equivalent level of English intensive review of grammar and increase confidence in formulating a variety of sentences enhance competency in standard written English with a focus on writing strong paragraphs and developing good essays develop critical thinking, practice research skills and rhetorical focus

3 LEARNING OUTCOMES 1. Produce simple, compound, and complex sentences using correct punctuation and spelling 1. Utilize grammar and syntax 1. Recognize and correct errors in writing 1. Demonstrate the control of basic rhetorical patterns of paragraph development 1. Produce well-developed, focused, adequately researched and documented writing material 1. Demonstrate advanced reading comprehension as preparation for higher level English and other courses 2. Understand and employ patterns and expectations of American culture, especially in the college environment.

4 REQUIRED TEXTS

5 ATTENDANCE POLICY skills development course - attend all sessions late for any reason, try not to disturb the class when you arrive Miss more than three class meetings – instructor will drop you If you decide to drop a course - a drop card must be filled out don’t expect me to know it emergency that prevents attendance, contact the the office and/ or leave a message in my email absent from a class, it is your responsibility to be prepared for the next class – ask a friend

6 Course Evaluation Policy 20% Grammar Quizzes (8/10 quizzes) 40% Writing Assignments (4/5 essays) 10% Class participation including: lab work journal writing home work 30% Final Exam

7 GRADES 90-100% = A = excellent work 80-89% = B = good work 70-79% = C = average work 60-69% = D = not satisfactory work for credit 59% and below = F = failing work for this level CREDIT/NO CREDIT class, so your final grade must be at least 70% to pass the class and move on to ESL 54. If you do not get 70%, you will receive NON-CREDIT (NC), and you must repeat the class.

8 NOTE ON LATE PAPERS & HOMEWORK All work must be turned in on time. Late work will not be accepted unless very exceptional circumstances exist. If I decide to accept late work, the grade will be dropped one letter grade. No make-up quizzes will be given. No make-up tests will be given unless the student has talked with the teacher about it before the test.

10 Important days to Remember Last day to add class – Friday, September 11 Last day to drop with a refund – Fri, November 20 Last day to drop without a ‘W’– Monday, Sept. 14 Last day to drop with a ‘W’ – Sunday Oct. 11 Final Exam –Friday, December 18 (8 to 10:30 a.m.)
