3 3 Eligibility (1 st screening) First-level university degree relevant to occupational group (see notice for description of disciplines) Applicants should not be more than 32 years old as of 31 December 2010 Fluent in either English or French National of participating Member State

4 4 Occupational groups Administration Demography Economics Human Rights Legal Affairs Radio Producer (Arabic, Chinese or French) Security Statistics Web Design/Development

5 5 If more than 40 nationals (of same country) are eligible in one occupational group after the 1 st screening => The 40 best candidates will be selected (2 nd screening) based on:  Work experience  International exposure  Education  Language skills  Publications 1 st screening (qualitative) /2 nd screening (quantitative)

6 6 Written examination General Paper in English or French (45 min) Specialized Paper in any official language (3 hours 45 min) Candidates can take the exam at any test centre Candidates must travel to test center at their own cost

7 7 Oral examination Competency-based interview Questions in international affairs UN covers travel expenses of the candidates

8 8 Successful candidates Are placed on a roster and offered a position when P-2 vacancies occur Posts in NY, Geneva, Vienna, Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Bangkok, Beirut, Santiago, and field missions in some cases Obtain a two-year fixed-term contract Tend to have a career with the UN. The turnover rate is low: 2%

9 9 Milestones & respective roles  Your role: Publicity efforts 7 June-19 September 2010 (11:59 PM EST): Application received through the UN careers portal (careers.un.org)  Our role: Mid- October: Give you the provisional number of candidates from your country invited to the written exam  Your role: Inform us of the address of the test centre (minimum requirement for the opening of a centre in your capital is 6 convoked candidates)  Our role: Early-November: Inform you about total number and names of candidates convoked from your country 1 December 2010: Written examination
