1 Ancient Egyptian Marketplace

2 How do you think Egyptians got the things they needed for their homes?
This picture shows people in an Egyptian house with all kinds of objects. What do you see? How do you think Egyptians got the things they needed for their homes?

3 Markets were busy places where people brought food, animals, household items and crafts like jewelry and amulets.

4 How did Egyptians get things to the market?
Ancient Egyptians were expert basket makers. Sometimes they carried baskets full of items to sell on their heads. When they had bigger items, animals pulled carts carrying them. How do you think people walked while carrying baskets on their heads?

5 How did Ancient Egyptians buy and sell things?
They didn’t use money, instead they often traded what they had for things they needed. When people were paid for work, they were usually paid with loaves of bread and jugs of beer.

6 Trading… Imagine that you want to buy a special amulet for good luck. You have fish to trade. How many fish do you think would you need to trade to get the amulet?

7 What do you think this woman is selling at the market?
What do you think she might want to buy?

8 Visualize… We are at an Egyptian market…what do we see around us?
Is it crowded? What are people doing? What kinds of things are people selling? What needs brought people to the market? Turn and tell a friend what you see.
