Outline 1. Learn about Leveled Reading 2. Most common leveled reading methods in America 3. Lexile Frame for Reading 4. Leveled reading methods applied in Kang Chiao Library 5. Leveled book collection in KCIS Library 6. Resources

Learn about Leveled Reading -What is Leveled Reading/ Graded Reading? Chose shoes Accurate quantize Reader’s reading ability and classified criteria The development of a self-extending system is supported reading of books Many Leveled Reading standards can refer to each leveled reading measure. Guiding but forcing

-Benefit of Leveled Reading Help students become good reader: -read variety of materials -learn from their reading Help teachers / parents provide readers with the right level of support and challenge 1.Learn about Leveled Reading

-Leveled Book Collection A large set of books organized in levels of difficulty from easy books 1.Learn about Leveled Reading

-Criteria for Leveling books Length Layout Structure and Organization Words Literary Features Content and Theme Reference 1.Learn about Leveled Reading

2.Most Common Leveled Reading Methods Alphabetical system -Guided Reading Level (GRL) Grade system - Grade Equivalent Level (GEL) Numeric system - Lexile Framework for Reading (Lexile) - Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) - Accelerated Reader Level (AR) - Reading Recovery (RR)

Example 2: DRA DRA levels are assigned and to select texts for independent reading by teacher. Reading material is pre-leveled by leveling experts to match the expected reading performance of students K-8. The Developmental Reading Assessment takes into account a book's content when determining its reading level. 2.Most Common Leveled Reading Methods

2.Most common leveled reading methods DRA

DRA applied in Taipei Library DRA Level

3.The Lexile Framework® for Reading MetraMetrics website.com Program developed in 1984 in with a grant from National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) Gary L. Williamson, Ph.D., educational researcher associated with the University of North Carolina. MetraMetrics, Inc.

3.The Lexile Framework® for Reading MetraMetrics website.com Lexile scale (the READER): Developmental scale for reading Range from below 200L (beginning-reader material) to above 1700L (advanced text).

3.The Lexile Framework® for Reading MetraMetrics website.com 2 parts to Lexiles: Lexile measure Lexile scale How it works

3.The Lexile Framework® for Reading MetraMetrics website.com How it works Lexile measure (the TEXT): Reading ability or text difficulty score followed by an “L” (e.g. “850L”) Measures how difficult a text is to comprehend: semantic difficulty (word frequency) syntactic complexity (sentence length)

What Lexile does NOT measure: Content - –complexity of plot –complexity of character(s) Quality - –“good” books –books to “hook” reluctant readers Developmental suitability –Age-appropriateness –Prior knowledge required for comprehension

How do we measure?: Without Professional Guiding: –Choose a book by grade or age to test –Use “find book”

How to get measure score?: International Assessment:

Which books are lexiled? “Over 450 publishers Lexile their titles” “Tens of thousands of books” “Tens of millions of newspaper & magazine articles.” MetraMetrics website.

How can you find these books? Metametric’s website: http://www.lexile.com EBSCO & ProQuest (online subscription databases) NoveList (online subscription database)

Title, Author, ISBN Lexile Measure Find Lexile Right Book!!

Finding Example: The Great Gatsby Lexile level Ages Results

Find it on : Amazon, BARNES & NOBLE

Knowing About Lexile Measures

Tools of Lexile Measures

Learn more about Lexile Measures

Some Lexile observations: Nonfiction tends to score higher than fiction. Most middle school fiction books fall in the 600L to 1000L range. Fantasy fiction tends to score high Mystery fiction tends to score low

More Lexile observations: Most authors tend to be consistent in their lexile scoring No apparent correlation between book length and lexile score. Not necessarily a correlation between target audience and lexile score.

Conclusions Don’t rely on lexile stickers (numbered or color-coded) placed on the books Teach students how to use OPAC or programs such as NoveList to search for books in lexile range. Respect confidentiality

Why the Lexile Framework is Different? MetraMetrics website.com Lexiles are instrument independent-any standardized test could report reading scores in Lexile The Lexile Framework is unique in matching reader ability to text difficulty on the same scale using the same method A student’s Lexile measure is more than a test score- creating a strong school-home connection 3.The Lexile Framework® for Reading

Why KCIS Library chooses Lexile Framework for Reading Scientific approach to reading and text measurement Matches reader ability and text difficulty, allowing individualized monitoring of progress Research shows improves reading skills MetraMetrics website.com 3.The Lexile Framework® for Reading
