2 2 Question: 7. “Sport has a low profile in Hong Kong and will continue to do because of the lack of facilities and a lack of status.” Is this statement true? Are there any other causes for Hong Kong’s poor reputation as a sporting power? Are there any plans to change this?

4 4 Yes! Sports have low profile in Hong Kong due to 1.the lack of sport facilities in Hong Kong. 2.sports are not appealing to youngsters

6 6 According to a windsurfing athlete, Cheung Yuen Yee 1.not enough sports facilities in Hong Kong 2.most sports facilities are not up to standard 3.Hong Kong lacks multi-purpose main games arena Case Study In some districts, like Tung Chung, the residents do not have a swimming pool in their district. If they want to go swimming, they need to go to Tsing Yi. These cause a lot inconvenience to them. From this, we can see that certain sports facilities are really lacking in Hong Kong.

7 7 Adult population participating in sports is small as seen in Exhibit 3. This is mainly because of lack of facilities.

8 8 Lack of world-class sport facilities to the local athletes The facilities are limited athletes from different sports need to share the facilities. Hong Kong Sports Institution (HKSI) is the only place in Hong Kong to supply all the facilities (e.g. training places, gyms, nutritionists, psychologists, and accommodations) for athletes.” said Cheung Yuen Yee, a windsurfing athlete.

18 18 Sports for all It is a movement which seeks to pursue the promotion of health, fitness and well-being through sports activities which can be adapted to each and every individual.  Develop programmes which encourage progressive participation at schools, districts and community level  Increase the number of volunteers to deliver sports, through networking and training  Increase the number, range, and accessibility of sports opportunities

19 19 Conclusion The HKSI believe that through the additional funding and the government’s commitment to the sports sector, the development of local sports will undoubtedly have a bright future. The status of sports in HK is rising according to our interviewee (Cheung Yuen Yee)

20 20 Local athletes Cheung Yuen Yee said “ The facilities are limited and athletes from different sports need to share the facilities.” The government should provide more training facilities to the local athletes.

Why?  Do you think the measurement that carried by the government can help to foster the status of sports in Hong Kong?  Base on your own knowledge, do you think that the government provide enough subsidy to Hong Kong athletes?
