2. Book Clubs Purpose: The purpose of our book groups will be to explore a text with peers in order to deepen thinking, share ideas and to learn cooperatively based on a shared text. Requirements: Students will be required to read IN CLASS, the book they are assigned (based on choice input) and complete assigned discussion and charting tasks with a team of students reading the same book at a similar pace.

3. Book Clubs Responsibility: Each learner is responsible for reading and actively participating in book club discussions. Each Club will submit a chart of their discussions and tasks at the end of every week. Each student is responsible to keep talk on-task and refrain from distracting behavior during club time. Any miss-use of class time will result in a deduction of points from that individual’s grade for this experience.

4. Book Clubs What if I’m absent? If you are absent for one or more book club session, it is up to you to make-up the reading you missed at home or during an appropriate recess or ‘down’ time. You will check with your club at the next meeting you attend to write a single paragraph outlining one major concept, surprising development or prediction you have based on the text you read to catch up.

5. Book Selection Process Write down your top choice and a short reason why you are most interested and suited for that title. Write down your 2 nd and 3 rd choices as well. Ms. Kroschel will evaluate your requests and assign groups based on interest, compatibility of groups, and appropriateness of title to learner skill. Ms. Kroschel will try to make sure everyone gets one of their top 3 choices, but can make no guarantees. Once your book is assigned, you will be responsible for reading a certain amount each day so that you are staying on track with your team.
