3 3 Let’s Talk About It What is Obesity? What are some of the factors that contribute to obesity? What are some health problems associates with obesity? What are some treatments for obesity? What are some ways to prevent obesity?

4 4 Sharing the Knowledge  Obesity has been linked to several serious medical conditions. Medical conditions such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and cancer are all attributed to obesity. Heart disease and strokes are the leading causes of deaths in the United States.  Obesity occurs when a person consumes more calories than he or she burns. For many people this boils down to eating too much and exercising too little. But there are other factors that also play a role in obesity such as diet, lack of physical activity, gender, and medication.

5 5 Sharing the Knowledge  Obesity is an excess proportion of total body fat. A person is considered obese when his or her weight is 20% or more above normal weight. The most common measure of obesity is the body mass index or BMI. A person is considered overweight if his or her BMI is between 25 and 29.9; a person is considered obese if his or her BMI is over 30.

6 6 Sharing the Knowledge Exercise regularly. One of the most important things you can do to prevent weight gain is to exercise regularly. Studies suggest that it takes 30 to 60 minutes of moderately intense physical activity daily to keep the pounds off. Moderately intense physical activities include fast walking and swimming.

11 11 Sharing the Knowledge  A balanced diet and regular physical activity are the building blocks of good health. Poor eating habits and too little physical activity can lead to overweight and related health problems. By eating right and being active, you can stay at or reach a healthy weight.

12 12 Sharing the Knowledge  Eat breakfast every day; Choose whole grains more often,; Select a mix of colorful vegetables each day; At restaurants, eat only half your meal and take the rest home; Take a walk after dinner.

13 13 Sharing the Knowledge  Reduce your risk of or manage chronic diseases Build strong muscles, bones, and joints; Improve flexibility and balance; Ward off depression; and Improve mood and sense of well-being.

16 16 Let’s Talk About It A healthy adult blood pressure is 140/80. Hypertension can cause damage to the brain, eyes, kidneys, and blood vessels. Most cases of hypertension are caused by kidney disease. There are numerous factors that may increase your risk for hypertension. Most doctors suggest changing your lifestyle before prescribing drugs to treat hypertension.

17 17 Sharing the Knowledge  On average, one African American dies from high blood pressure every hour, yet barely a quarter of hypertensive African Americans has the disease under control.  Health risks associated with hypertension include stroke, heart failure, heart attack, kidney failure, and vision problems.

18 18 Sharing the Knowledge s  The causes of hypertension included smoking, obesity, lack of physical activity, too much salt in the diet, too much alcohol consumption, stress, old age, and genetics.  Hypertension can be prevented by mmaintaining a healthy weight, getting regular exercise, reducing salt intake, drinking alcohol in moderation, and reducing stress.
