Monday March 2, 2009 There are 8 Invertebrate Animal Phyla, today we will begin researching the first two, can you name them? Where would you find these organisms? Why?

Phylum Porifera (Sponges) Who” is the most famous Sponge?

Phylum Porifera “Pore-Bearers” 1. Major Classes & Examples: Calcarea – spicules (skeleton) of calcium carbonate Hexactinellida - spicules of silica Demospongia – most diverse; over 90% of species Demospongia: What kind of symmetry does it have? 2. Symmetry: Radial or Asymmetrical

Phylum Porifera 3. Body Openings: -None 4. Classifying Characteristics Simplest animals, multicellular · No organs or body systems · Sessile (do not move) · Skeleton composed of spongin (soft) and spicules (hard)

Phylum Porifera 5. Reproduction (Sexual or Asexual) Sexual – the union of sponge egg and sperm results in a swimming larva that escapes from the parent sponge and grows a new individual. Asexual – small buds can break off and live separately, Sponges can regenerate.

Phylum Porifera 6. Feeding Types: - Filter Feeder

IMPORTANCE & INTERESTING EXTRAS VIDEO CLIP VIDEO CLIP VIDEO CLIP Phylum Porifera

Phylum Cnidaria (Stinging Cell) 1.Major Classes & Examples: Class Hydrozoa – Portuguese Man-of-War & Hydras Class Scyphozoa – Jellyfish Class Anthozoa – Sea Anemone and Corals 2. Symmetry: Radial

Phyum Cnidaria 3.Body Openings: 1 - mouth 4. Classifying Characteristics -Aquatic, mostly in ocean -Live as polyps (sessile) or medusa (swimming) -Classified by their spring-loaded stinging cells

Phylum Cnidaria 5.Reproduction Sexual or Asexual

Phylum Cnidaria 6.Feeding types: Tentacles capture small animals with nematocysts and paralyze them with poison – tentacles push prey into the cnidarians mouth

IMPORTANCE & INTERESTING EXTRAS VIDEO CLIPS (5) VIDEO CLIPS VIDEO CLIPS Phylum Cnidaria

Phylum Porifera (Sponges) “Who” is the most famous Sponge? Your HOMEWORK: 1. What is WRONG (scientifically speaking) with Sponge Bob? You must have at least 5 things!

Phylum Cnidaria: Closure 2. How do you think a “jelly fish” obtained this common name? 3. How would you explain to someone (scientifically speaking) why a jelly fish is not a fish?
