1 International Summit on ICT in Education EDU-SUMMIT 2009 Working groups Panel Session June 11, 2009 Teacher/Learner Perspective Kwok-Wing Lai, University of Otago College of Education, New Zealand

2 Teacher/Learner Perspective Claims: o The use of technology must be underpinned by learning theories and pedagogical principles. Technology should not be used to drive pedagogy. o Technology should be embedded in the learning environment and integrated into the classroom culture. o Technology is effective if teachers use it to engage students in the learning tasks, scaffold them to inquire, discover, critique, create, and apply new understanding and knowledge, within a community of learners. 1

3 Most important goals/objectives in the near future o Deeper understanding - We need to know more about what actually happens to the learner during the learning process, when technology is used to support such a process. o Scaling up – from small scale exemplary projects to everyday practice in schools. o Changing the classroom culture – attitudes, beliefs, of what technology can and should do to support teaching and learning. o 2

4 Proposed action of how to get there o Promoting ‘authentic’, ‘useable’ research, and collaborating with practitioners. o Producing leadership at the national (schools, districts) and international levels (professional organizations). o Providing the link between research and policy, research and practice, and policy and practice. 3
