1 Process Industry Data Integration Strategies
Jehu T. Burton PELC 2006 June 7, 2006

2 The Vision of DuPont To be the world’s most dynamic science company,
creating sustainable solutions essential to a better, safer, healthier life for people everywhere.

6 The DuPont Data Integration Landscape
Enterprise/Finance Engineering Operations Maintenance Process Modeling & Estimating Design Automation & Process Control Systems SAP AspenTech Engineering Suite Aveva Engineering Suite Meridium Supplier Information

7 AspenTech Engineering Suite Aveva Engineering Suite
The Data Model Problem AspenTech Engineering Suite Aveva Engineering Suite SAP Meridium Every one of these applications has a different data model It is difficult to transfer basic equipment information: Asset number (tag information) Equipment classification (equipment name) Subset of equipment attributes

8 Where is the train heading?
AspenTech Engineering Suite Aveva Engineering Suite SAP Meridium We are building a transcontinental railroad and we need to make incremental decisions so that the trains connect. We need an industry strategy map!

9 Industry Issues We have multiple industry integration strategies.
We use multiple application providers that do not interoperate. We can longer afford proprietary or individual company solutions.

10 Conclusions We need a Process Industry data integration strategy.
We need to align around a set of data standards. We need to work together to be successful.

11 Process Industry Data Integration Workshop – August 8 & 9, 2005
Workshop Objective: How can we accelerate achieving integrated digital information for process industry facilities?

12 Workshop Attendees Robin Benjamins – Bechtel Bart Neighbors – ConocoPhillips Ewan Botterill – Intergraph Mark Palmer – NIST Jehu Burton – DuPont Onno Paap – Fluor Andy Bush – KBR/Halliburton Sylvia Rappenecker – Dow Chemical Manoj Dharwadkar – Bentley Sys Dalip Sud – Shell Global Solutions Int’l Kristine Fallon – KFA Inc. Tom Teague – ePlantData Elizabeth Fowler – SAP Nicole Testa – FIATECH Son Huynh – IBM Alan Tough – ConocoPhillips Ric Jackson – FIATECH Robert Trosper – ConocoPhillips Sue Jones – Merck Magne Valen-Sendstad – POCS Caesar Adrian Laud – Noumenon Paul van Exel – USPI-NL Andy McBrien – AspenTech Ray Walker – DuPont Neil McPhater – Aveva Phil Yewdall – Aker Kvaerner

13 Workshop Accomplishments
Alignment of views and a sharing of data integration knowledge. Relationship building between North American and European experts. Greater understanding and status of the relevant international standards and the management/infrastructure process, AEX project, and XMpLant. Comparison and analysis of existing data integration solutions. A path forward agreed to by attending owner operators, EPC contractors, software suppliers, and consortia including goals, strategy and project plans addressing priorities and logical sequence of future activities.

14 Point-to-Point Mapping
App 2 Input File Format Application 1 Application 2 Map App 1 input File Format Advantages Easy to understand & implement (lowest one-off cost) Usage-driven exchanges (only exchange what you need) Limitations: Expensive: number of interfaces scales increases with the square of the number of applications, N Difficult to maintain as software versions change Courtesy of Tom Teague, ePlantData

15 Point-to-Point Mapping

16 Common Format Mapping Advantages
File Format Application 1 Application 2 Map or Database Advantages Software-neutral data exchange & archival format Number of interfaces scales linearly with number of applications, N Usage-driven exchanges Limitations: Requires agreement on common format Need common industry entity to define and maintain Courtesy of Tom Teague, ePlantData

20 Current Status August Workshop strategy embraced by FIATECH Technology Roadmap, Lifecycle Data Management and Information Integration Team. Dow, DuPont, and Shell Press Release issued January 18, 2006 representing 15 companies and international bodies. New FIATECH project to accelerate deployment of ISO in support of August 2005 Data Integration Workshop. Huge interest at daratechPLANT2006 Conference, January 23 – 25, 2006 in Houston, TX. Building industry consensus and support for ISO adoption.

21 Accelerating Deployment of ISO 15926
Project Goals Aligned with the Process Industry “Data Integration Workshop” Standard-based neutral platform for lifecycle information between different computer systems exchange sharing integration hand-over Deliverables Tested Open Source ISO compliant integration software that can be used as basis for commercial developments Evergreen Internet-based online library of ISO providing a Single Global Source of reference data core classes and object information models
