It is adjacent in the northern part to Romania, in the southern part to Greece and Turkey and in the Western part to Serbia and to the Antigua Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia. Its capital city is Sofia. Land extension: 110.910 km ² In 2007, Bulgaria had a population of 7.322.000 inhabitants and life expectancy was 72.5 years. 98.6 % of its population is alphabetized. 8 Rivers The principal river is the Danube, with its two tributaries in Bulgaria: the Iskar (370 km) and the Jantra (290 km). Other important rivers are the Kamcija (180 km), which flows into the Black sea and the Struma and the Mesta, which flow into the Aegean Sea.

9 Economy Until 1947, Bulgaria was an agricultural country without scarcely heavy industry. In the communist period initiated after the World War II, all the industrial companies followed a series of economic five-year plans imitating the Soviet model.
