Step 2: Print the list(s) for the areas that you want to start weeding. Detail by 10s:Avg. Age # % of Coll. 140 Specific Philosophical Schools 1967 6 0.01% 180 Ancient,... Philosophy 1978 21 0.05% 190 Modern Western Philosophy 1979 39 0.09% Collection Analysis - Detail by 10s 140 - Specific Philosophical Schools This report identifies the specific titles in your collection that fall within this category. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Call # Title Author Year Barcode 140 BEN Constructing a life philosophy : Bender, David L., 1936- 1985 50007010168999 141 MIL The transcendentalists, an anthology. 11 Step 3: Pull the books: Pull items on the list(s). Pull a full list or a cart’s worth If you have the space to store them until you can get to them, pull more than one cart’s worth if you need it to complete a list or if you want to have another cart ready to go Rev. 9/7/15

Steps 4a & 4b: Consider each item for withdrawal (a 5-part process): Check stats on each item in library software: # of checkouts # of in-house uses Last time discharged Last user If it’s been used within the last 2-3 years, check whether the newest schools have the item and, if so, whether it’s been used there. Rev. 9/7/15

Library Software Maintenance Page Rev. 9/7/15

Step 4c: Consider each item for withdrawal (a 5-part process): If you need the item, check whether you already have current materials on hand that meet the need. Rev. 9/7/15

Conduct a Subject or Keyword Search Rev. 9/7/15

Steps 4d & 4e: Consider each item for withdrawal (a 5-part process): If you don’t, look for newer materials and add to a Withdrawal Replacement list in Titlewave. If you can’t find a better replacement, keep it, but place a note in your software’s Notes area so that the next time you pull the item for withdrawal consideration, you know what you’ve already discovered. Withdraw the book from your collection. Rev. 9/7/15

Get Help! Rev. 9/7/15

Step 5: Make catalog corrections As you’re looking for books on the lists and searching the catalog for various stats, you will find catalog errors such as: Items attached to incorrect records; if you’re keeping it, fix it! Items that have had renewed copyrights that aren’t reflected in the record. If the renewed copyright meets your parameters for currency, fix it! Rev. 9/7/15

Steps 5c & 5d: Make catalog corrections Items that have incorrect or incomplete call numbers; fix them! Items that you’d rather move to another section (e.g., all career books in 331.7, all Science Fair books in 508.7, etc.); this is a great way to identify and pull these items and place them on a cart to work with as you find time. Taft’s College, Career, & Testing Section Rev. 9/7/15

FINALLY... my personal belief: Too many librarians don’t weed or don’t weed ENOUGH because they see it as a chore. If you take a systematic approach to it using tools that are readily at your disposal, you CAN have fun and discover that your library can look like this: BEFORE: SHELVES PACKED! AFTER: NOT CROWDED; DISPLAY SPACE! Rev. 9/7/15

CREW: Continuous Review, Evaluation, and Weeding MUSTIE: Misleading, Ugly, Superseded, Trivial, Irrelevant, Elsewhere (see p. 46 in CREW Manual for examples and/or qualifiers of these terms) Glossary Rev. 9/7/15
