oneone CS-8B Objective: To analyze data in order to draw and support conclusions. CSI Note: What can be learned from lab data? Drill: 1.Take out your Exit Slip and Activity Sheet CS8-A. 2.Check for your name on the back board. 3.Get a new lab from the SET. 4.Complete the Drill on the lab sheet.

oneone CS-8A Which set of procedures do you like the best? Justify your response.

oneone CS-8B Activity 1: Graphs and Data Charts A group of students conducted an experiment to answer the problem question. They lost their data. Examine the data chart below. It contains the independent variable, but none of the results.

oneone CS-8B CHART 1 DENSITY OF MYSTERY LIQUID VOLUME (mL)MASS (g)DENSITY (g/mL) 15 30 60 85 100

oneone CS-8B Luckily one of the group members created a graph of the data before it was lost. Use Graph 1, “The Effect of Volume on the Mass of an Unknown” to find the missing mass data.

oneone CS-8B CHART 1 DENSITY OF MYSTERY LIQUID VOLUME (mL)MASS (g)DENSITY (g/mL) 15 30 60 85 100

oneone CS-8B Calculate the value of density for the mass and volume readings in Chart 1. Remember, the formula for density is density = mass ÷ volume

oneone CS-8B CHART 1 DENSITY OF MYSTERY LIQUID VOLUME (mL)MASS (g)DENSITY (g/mL) 15 1.0 30 1.0 60 1.0 85 1.0 100 1.0

oneone CS-8B Now, you need to look for patterns or trends in the data. A pattern is a repeated action. For example: The temperature increases five degrees every minute. A trend is a general tendency. For example: The weight increases as time goes on.

oneone CS-8B Identify the pattern you recognize in the density column of Chart 1. The density for every volume of the unknown substance remains constant at 1g/mL.

oneone CS-8B Can the density be used to help identify the unknown substance? Explain. Density can be used to help identify the mystery substance. It is a characteristic property. Therefore it remains constant for a given substance.

oneone CS-8B Look at Chart 2, “Densities of Common Liquids”. You found this information in a science book. DENSITIES OF COMMON LIQUIDS LIQUIDDensity (g/mL) Gasoline0.670 Water1.000 Ethyl Alcohol0.791 Chloroform1.490 Olive Oil0.920

oneone CS-8B Identify the possible identity of the mystery substance. Look carefully at both data charts. Give the reasoning for your answer. WATER
