My home is not quiet but I am not loud. The lord has meant us to journey together. I am faster than he and sometimes stronger, But he keeps on going for longer. Sometimes I rest but he runs on. For as long as I am alive I live in him. If we part from one another It is I who will die.

1282– England conquers Wales. 1337– 100 year war begins with France. 1430– Modern English develops from Middle English. 1477– First book published at printing press by Caxton.

19 Beowulf- Introduction
Europe enters chaotic period of political unrest and economic and cultural decline. The tribes, Angles, Saxons, and Jutes, settled on the island of Britain. Angles, Saxons, and Jutes = Anglo-Saxon Civilization Beowulf takes place in Europe between the Danes (Denmark) and Geats (Sweden).

20 Beowulf-Introduction
We do not know the author. Beowulf is a great warrior who crosses the sea to aid the Danes (Denmark) and later returns to Sweden to succeed his uncle Hygelac’s throne. The people in the story are not Christian yet.

21 Beowulf- Introduction
What did these people do for fun? They would gather in huge mead halls, large wooden buildings, where they feasted, drank mead (alcohol), and told stories. The stories were told by scops, and the stories were told as epic poetry.
