DUE MARCH 27, BUT YOU CAN TURN IT IN EARLY!! MY ABSENCE TURN IT IN EARLY TURN IT IN TO THE PROPER BUCKET IN MY CLASSROOM (SUB WILL BE AWARE) TURN IT IN TO MR. PAGE Research Essay Reminders

common mistakes Extra space To rid yourself of extra spaces between paragraphs and heading/title…  Home tab  paragraph  extra options box ( )  spacing  check the box that reads “don’t add space between paragraphs of the same style”  You might have to highlight everything or delete space and then return again  The best way to prevent this problem is to do it before you start typing the paper (so remember this the next time you write a paper in college).

common mistakes Incorrect MLA Insert the header properly:  Double click at the top  Right align  Type your last name with a SPACE at the end  Insert page number (plain number “in current position) This will ensure it is spaced properly.

common mistakes Incorrect MLA

common mistakes Passive voice (The theme was revealed… vs. Burgess reveals the theme…) Use present tense when analyzing literature Historical information is past tense. When referencing the author (primary and secondary), use his/her first and last name and then last name only thenceforth. Citing long titles of articles is unnecessary… it’s fluff. “one”=1 person= his/her/him/her/it/its “their” should be used only when referencing multiple people

common mistakes Title of the Novel “Article Title” Absolutely no “you” or “I” unless it is in a quote to “change a quote to fit the sentence, put the [changed word(s) in brackets].” No contractions Blend quotes into a sentence. Avoid absolute words: all, always, every, each, any, anyone, etc. Avoid vague words: thing, everything, something, sometimes, kind of, a lot, etc. Avoid bland words

internal citation “quote” (1 st word of citation #). “quote” (1 st word of citation #) more analysis. paraphrase (1 st word of citation #). paraphrase (1 st word of citation #) use information that is not common knowledge (1 st word of citation #). use information that is not common knowledge (1 st word of citation #) more analysis. **When in doubt, internally cite!!

structure Thesis should be one arguable sentence that controls the paper. Topic sentences should assert a clear idea. It is a sharp and precise statement about the issue in the paragraph. It should not be plot or a fact. Each paragraph needs a mixture of primary quotes, secondary quotes, and analysis. (see examples) Close each paragraph with a statement that concludes the issue discussed and examples proven. Conclusion should draw a larger idea, complete the intro but not simply mimic it, and provide a thematic observation of sorts.

What to turn in… Buy a manila envelope. Top: final paper Peer edit paper with rough draft Annotated bib (original with grade) Prospectus Bottom: any printouts/copies of sources
