Common Core Shift for Mathematics Focus: –Spend more time on a topic and the multiple perspectives of the content Coherence: –Think across grades and link to major topics within grades Rigor: –Conceptual understanding –Procedural skill and fluency –Application

The goal of the CCSS is college and workforce readiness for all students Better standards call for better assessments. The CCSS focus on 21 st century skills  problem solving  collaboration  critical thinking  creativity Things Parents Need to Know about the Common Core State Standards

The CCSS are aligned to college and workplace expectations The CCSS are benchmarked against academic standards from the world’s top- performing countries The CCSS delve deeper into core concepts

Courses that Lead to College and Career Readiness Students who complete Algebra 2 by the end of 11th grade with a “C” or higher will perform better on the SAT and ACT college entrance exams and are less likely to have to take remedial math courses in college. Students who complete Algebra 2 also are more than twice as likely to graduate from college than are students with less mathematical preparation. ~MCPS 2009

MCPS Roll-Out Plan

High School GPA The grades earned in these courses DO stay on your child’s cumulative HS GPA

Pace and Structure of Class New lessons frequently Students work in groups frequently Teacher facilitates instruction to help students derive meaning from the content

Homework Expectations Nightly, weekends Review daily. Selected problems “I don’t need to do homework” Must show all work Usually graded for completion Will I need a TI-83 for my homework?

Learning Expectations Absences –You have to still get the lesson and do the HW Extra Support –CT Support –Afterschool –Lunch Mixed lunches –Ms. Schrader- 7th –Ms. Kasayan & Ms. Poulin- 8 th
