The Together Plan concept Its only part of the process

What does Success look like?

Successful Together Plan Result New units positioned to succeed The Together Plan is not just about new units. It’s about new units positioned to succeed. It’s about new units equipped for long term service to youth. When will you know if you succeeded? When those units you formed have 36 months tenure.

Recently… Together Plan was modified to support this measure of success When used in conjunction with the Unit Performance Guide, success of the Together Plan improves dramatically The Together Plan can be part of Make the Call—chapter 3 of the UPG The UPG acts like bookends to the Together Plan event

The Unit Performance Guide is the approved BSA best method strategy for creating and sustaining high-performing units for local councils. To access the Unit Performance Guide, visit www.scouting.org/membershipwww.scouting.org/membership and click on “New Unit Development.”

Phase One: Be Prepared Before your Together Plan event, work through the first two chapters of the Unit Performance Guide: 1. Know the Market 2. Build the Team

Know the Market Use all the tools you have available to determine where you want to plant a unit Council Marketing Analysis Report (CMAR) Full Scouting Family Consider the district geography Research the potential organizations Decide who to invite to be chartered organizations

Build the Team Now that you know how many units, it's time to BUILD THE TEAM You need a team for each potential new unit They need to be recruited and trained before your event Team: New-Unit Organizer New-Unit Commissioner Professional Scouter to guide the volunteers

Phase Two: Make the Call Usually done by the team making the call on the Institutional Head But SOMETIMES you have several prospects that have something in common: Community Organization like a Rotary Club A particular faith like Methodist A particular school system or home-school association All the same type unit When that happens the Together Plan is a GREAT option

The Together Plan Process Systematic approach Common denominator organizations invited Benefits of Scouting, role of chartered organizations explained Organizing Team encourages commitment Follow-up immediately

Details Online Together Plan online Back-dated schedule Sample letters Event agenda

Phase Three: Grow the Unit Position the unit for success: 10 kids 5 adults Unit Key 3 New-Unit Commissioner and a strong Chartered Organization NO UNIT BEFORE ITS TIME!

From the Field Rodney Carpenter, SE Old North State Council "The key to a successful “Together Plan” is pre-planning. Specifically it is well worth the time and effort to recruit and train a new unit organizer and a new unit commissioner at least 6 months prior to the event. Doing so will help ensure a higher success rate with new unit commitments.” Other tips from Rodney: Invitation letter followed by two telephone contacts Invite some current chartered organizations: review of role of organization helps strengthen their unit their experience encourages others It doesn't have to be big to be successful

Planting Successful Units Employ the UPG--Pillars 1 and 2 If common denominator, use Together Plan Faithfully follow schedule/best practices Immediately follow-up using UPG Pillar 4

Together Plan Success Success of your Together Plan is not measured by how many individuals come or how many commitment cards you get. Success is measured by how many units you start that are positioned to provide long term service to youth

Sustainable Unit Growth Plant Units Grow Youth Harvest Leaders for tomorrow

Together Plan Best methods from local councils Longhorn Council - Fort Worth, Texas Old North State Council – Greensboro, South Carolina
