Post WWII Korea was controlled by Japan After the war, the Soviet Union and the United States agree to divide Korea between the North (USSR) and the South (USA) –To be divided along 38 th parallel Originally temporary but Communist and Capitalist governments emerging

Invasion! June 25, 1950 – North Korea invades South Korea President Harry Truman sends the United Nations October, 1950 – US/UN forces march across 38 th parallel China sends thousands of troops and pushes back

Tug of War Each side pushes the other back No ground really gained 1953 – Armistice to end the war signed, nobody wins, 38 th parallel remains the border still today.

The Korean “Conflict?” There was no formal declaration of war by congress, thus not an “official” war. –Sometimes called a “police action”
