Welcome to Glynn Middle School’s Media Center We are here to help you!

Staff: Media Specialist – Mimi Mayberry-White (ext. 2173) Secretary – Stephanie Pool (ext. 2109) Technology Specialist – Joy Foster

Hours (official ones for students): Monday-Thursdays –7:45 am - 3:45 pm Fridays –7:45 am - 3:35 pm (Note all hours subject to change) (For teachers we open around 7:00 am)

Sending Students to the Media Center: You may only send THREE students at one time. Three things are needed: –Students must be wearing their PHOTO ID, –AGENDA must state what they are coming to do (i.e. – checkout a book, take an AR quiz, research on the computer), –Your SIGNATURE and TIME (please make sure it is on the correct date if using the weekly pages).

Media Center Sign Up We put out the new sign up sheets on Thursday afternoon at 3:35 (you are only allowed one day a week). You must email me your plan for using the Media Center (it does not have to be a formal lesson plan). Subs are NOT allowed to bring your classes to the media center (so if you signed up and you end up being out – have an alternate plan).

Equipment (lots of different types): For temporary checkout: –Tape recorders –CD players –Flip Cameras –Digital Cameras –Video Cameras Scanner (for use in the Media Center) –You can scan tests or work into Kurzweil (it is hooked up to computer #1).

Computers (Teachers): Laptops and Desktops run Windows XP. They are monitored downtown, so be sure you are using them appropriately. You use your PIN and password to logon to any computer in the system (and a bonus is your image – folders, email, etc. follows you) – DO NOT give your password to anyone.

Computers (Teachers cont.): We do have mobile laptop carts for your use (2 per grade). You must go through training if you want to use these with your students. Stop by and we can decide on a time for your training. The training only takes about 20 minutes. You sign up for these through the Media Center and you are limited to one day per week.

Computers (Students): Students also use their PIN and password to logon to any computer in the system (if they forget their password – send them to the MC and I can help them). Students should NOT print unless it is their ORIGINAL work (no printing from the Internet – they can save notes to their MyDocuments file or a thumb drive – we try to save paper around here ).

Computers (Students cont.): We do have students that are not allowed to use the Internet. If this happens, you will be notified and I keep a list on the P Drive. Make sure you know if you are teaching any of these students so an alternative assignments can be made.

Computer Programs to Utilize: Lots of helpful programs are available on our Website for student use and yours - –BrainPop –Study Island –GA411 –GALILEO –World Book Online So take the time to explore the GMS Website.GMS Website

Periodicals/Magazines: We subscribe to 15 different ones and you will find the current issue on display Twice a year, we weed the back issues and put them up for grabs (August/January) for use in projects or just reading material for your classroom We also subscribe to The Brunswick News

Checking Out Books: Students are allowed to check out 2 books for two weeks (10 school days). Teachers can check out as many as they need, but please return them within a few weeks (4 max) so other students can have access to them as well. Students are not allowed to check out books for others and we discourage you checking out books for students, but if you do have them leave them in your classroom.

Overdues and Lost Books: We do not charge for overdue books, but lost books must be paid for by BOTH staff and students. If you pay for a book and then find it before the school year is over, we will gladly refund your money. We would much rather have the book. Student report cards are held at the end of the school year if a student fails to return or pay for their books.

DVDs in the Classroom: The policy for using DVDs in the classroom is that we show no more than 20 minutes at one time. If you plan to show a longer DVD, you must have Mr. Blackstone’s approval. Please be aware that DVDs that are rated PG require parental consent. All video usage should be included in your lesson plans no matter what the length.

Another Great Resource: Don’t forget about the Glynn County Materials Center. They have all sorts of books, equipment and videos that you can checkout. You can checkout their catalogue on Destiny Library Search! Their hours are from 8:00-4:30.
