4 Starting and Customizing Word pp WD6-10 To start Word, Windows must be running To begin do one of the following: 1.Click the Word 2003 icon on your desktop 2.Follow the step listed below –Click the Start button –Click All Programs –Point to Microsoft Office –Click on Word 2003 Once Word has opened it may display a task pane on the right side of the screen. A task pane is a separate window that enables users to carry out some Word tasks more efficiently. Toolbars contain button and boxes that allow you to perform frequent tasks quickly. The toolbars should be displayed on two separate rows. Each time you start Word, the Word window appears the same way it did the last time you used Word.

5 The Word Window pp wd10-16 Document window – displays text, tables, graphics Insertion point – blinking vertical bar where text is inserted End mark – short horizontal line that indicates end of document Mouse pointer – different shapes depending on the task Rulers – horizontal/vertical to set tabs, indents, margins Scroll bars – horizontal/vertical for displaying portions of your work Status bar – presents information dealing with status of work Menu bar – displays the Word menu names to perform tasks Short menu, Full menu, Dimmed command, Hidden command, Sub-menu Tools bars Screen tips, Standard toolbar, Formatting toolbar, Docked toolbar, Floating toolbar

6 Fundamentals of Word - Entering and Saving Text Fonts Name of the typeface Font size is determined using points 72 points = 1 inch Fonts can be selected and sized before typing Default size is 12 point Times New Roman Spelling and Grammar Status Red check mark – everything OK Red wavy line – word is not in the dictionary Green wavy line – word is incorrect grammatically Red X – spelling or grammar error is detected Formatting mark (non-printing character) Paragraph mark indicates where you pressed the ENTER key Raised dot indicates where you pressed the SPACEBAR Word wrap Allows you to type words in a paragraph continually without pressing the ENTER key at the end of each line Scrolling refer to tables 1-1 and 1-2 on pp. 24-25 for shortcut keys Saving a Document A saved document is called a file. It must be properly named and saved in the correct folder location. The file will have a.doc extension which identifies it as being a Word document.

7 Fundamentals of Word Paragraph and Character formatting Paragraph formatting – changing the appearance of a paragraph (center/indent) –Alignment – right, center, left, Character formatting – changing the way characters (letters, numbers, symbols) appear –Font size –Bold, italicize, Underline, Shadow

8 Fundamentals of Word Inserting Clipart Files containing graphical images are called GRAPHICS Clipart is predefined graphics located in the Clip Organizer Clipart can be line-art, photographs, sounds and video clips Clipart can be enlarged, reduced, moved, ordered, edited, animated and formatted
