Group 17 Halogens By: Eli, Emma, Liz, Monica, and MJ

 Halogens are highly reactive nonmetals in group 7A of the periodic table.  Nonmetals  All are diatomic and very reactive  fluorine (F), chlorine (Cl), bromine (Br), iodine (I), and astatine (At) What are halogens?

 Highly reactive (especially with alkali metals and alkaline earths)  This reactivity is due to high electronegativity and high effective nuclear charge  Often used as sterilizing and disinfecting agents  they can be harmful or lethal to biological organisms in sufficient quantities  Each element has 7 valence electrons  Can gain an electron by reacting with atoms of other elements. Chemical Properties

 range from solid (I2) to liquid (Br2) to gaseous (F2 and Cl2) at room temperature.  low melting points and boiling points.  become darker as you go down the group Physical Properties

 Fluorine  A pale yellow gas: the most abundant halogen  Chlorine-  is greenish yellow gas with a pungent odor: the most abundant ions that dissolve in the ocean  Bromine-  red-brown liquid that easily evaporates into a gas  Iodine  A pure solid: violet: many important roles in life, including thyroid hormone production  Astatine  the heaviest halogen: radioactive: black/metallic Elements
