April 29 - May 1, 2015 Developing Your Internal Culture & Aligning with Community on the Way to Impact

At Community Wealth Partners our goal is to help leaders solve social problems at the magnitude they exist. This may be unreasonable to most. But we believe that when the world pushes back, we must dream forward.

10 Insights on Social Transformation Be bold & believable Create shared leadership Open your circle Change the conversation Communications is strategy Discipline is key Build public support Experiment, learn & evolve Live in the market Build culture, intentionally 3

Today’s Agenda: Steps to Culture Change on the Way to Community Impact 1.Be Bold and Believable: Creating a Bold Goal 2.Open Your Circle: Implementing an Influence Strategy 3.Build Culture, Intentionally: Developing Values, Norms, and Behaviors 4.Discipline is Key: Igniting action by aligning individual beliefs and organizational values

1. A bold goal is the first step to transformational change 5 Creates new urgency and accountability to motivate and inspire stakeholders Unifies all partners and staff around a shared vision Provides a clear bottom line to measure progress Provides direction for key aspects of culture (mindset and behaviors)

2. Engaging unlikely and likely stakeholders to act (intentional influence) is central to strategy, culture. Intentional Influence: Five key questions to answer 1.Understanding Stakeholders: Who can help solve this problem, and where do we begin? 2.Understanding Assets: What assets can we leverage to move others to act? 3.Identifying the Desired Action: What is the action we want others to take? 4.Understanding the Barriers: What are the barriers to desired action? 5.Designing an Approach: How do we move people to take the desired action?

2. KaBOOM! built an intentional influence strategy to change societal norms Grassroots: Parents & Caregivers Desired Action: Play more KaBOOM! Strategy: Spotlight everyday heroes who promote and protect play (i.e., “America’s Most Playful Family” partnership with Disney) Grasstops: City Leaders Desired Action: Make it easier for kids to get the play they need KaBOOM! Strategy: Standard- setting and driving innovation (i.e., coining “playability” to elevate play to the same status as walkability and bikability; offering play in unlikely locations like bus stops, laundromats) “All kids get childhood filled with balanced and active play they need to thrive.”

3. Building culture intentionally requires moving beyond values to specific norms and behaviors. Values: What we care about as an organization Norms: Rules that define how to live the values Behaviors: Actions to take that follow the rules

3. Examples of Norms and Behaviors Norm #1: Live an attitude of changing the world – “Be the Change” Behaviors: Aligning organizational goals with community goals. Challenge colleagues and partners to think bolder. Regularly test the connection of our actions to the outcomes. Help others see their unique contribution to change. Hold teams accountable to outcomes. Norm #2: Joint responsibility across the organization – “No ‘one’ can whistle a symphony.” Behaviors Ask for and offer help. Engage diverse perspectives in problem solving and program design. Value the strengths of others. View my work as part of a larger system aimed at achieving a bigger outcome. Act to improve the work of others.

4. Discipline is key & realized through alignment of individual beliefs & organizational values.
