Crisis Management Plan Nimitz High School 2010 – 2011 REVISED 1/23/11

Important Things to Remember Doors should be locked at all times Both faculty and students need to wear their ID badges at all times Visitors must always wear their visitor’s badge and all district employees must wear Irving ISD ID badge Students are not to open exit doors for strangers. All visitors must sign in at the front desk

Important Things to Remember Listen to announcement over the PA system. Every second counts during a crisis, so take all lock downs, evacuations and weather drills seriously. Listen to the directions that your teacher gives you.

Emergency Lock Down Students and teachers will hear the following message over the PA: –“Teachers, we are going into emergency lock down. Teachers, we are going into emergency lock down. Teachers we are going into emergency lock down.” –“Please check the hallways outside your classrooms. If there are any students in the hallway, bring them in your classroom. Close and lock your door until further notice. Turn off the lights in your room and move students away from the door.”

Emergency Lock Down At this point, teachers will go out into the hallway and bring in any student(s) that are in the hall into their rooms. Teachers will then turn their classroom lights off and tell students to go to the back of the room, AWAY from the doors. Students are to remain quiet for their own safety. In a lock down situation the teacher will tell his/her students something to the effect: “Students, I don’t know what our crisis is at this time, but it is serious. I need for you to stay calm, quiet and wait for further instructions.”

Emergency Lock Down Students will be expected to stay off their cell phones and other electronic devices. Students will not be dismissed until you have gotten word from campus administration (even if the bell rings or fire alarm goes off). DOORS SHOULD NOT BE OPENED TO ANYONE!!!!!

Emergency Lock Down During a lockdown crisis, no one is allowed to leave the room for any reason. No one is allowed to leave to go to the RR, drink water, go to lunch, go to the front office because they have a doctor’s appointment, leave early because they have senior out or must go to work or go to their next class (even if the bell sounds).

Emergency Lock Down Remember, if an administrator or police officer needs inside your room, we will always have a key to get inside. Once the crisis has been identified and secured, someone will come to your room and give you further instructions.

Emergency Lock Down CAFETERIA: If lockdown occurs during breakfast time or lunch time, all students will be directed to move away from the cafeteria doors and tables. Students closest to the serving lines will be directed to move behind the serving lines into the kitchen area.

Emergency Lock Down CAFETERIA (cont.) The remaining students will be directed to go to the east side of the cafeteria and move behind the curtain. Students will take their personal belongings, walk swiftly and remain quiet for their own safety. Cafeteria manager will close the gate doors once the students are behind the serving line area.

Emergency Lock Down LOCKDOWN v EMERGENCY LOCKDOWN Lockdown – there is no imminent life threatening danger to the school. We would inform you of the situation at hand. We would secure all exterior doors and you would remain in your classrooms and stay put until further notice. You can continue to have class. Scenario: police activity in the neighborhood due to a known felon fleeing on foot, hostage situation in the neighborhood

Emergency Lock Down Emergency Lockdown: there is imminent life threatening danger to the school. We would inform you of the situation at hand. We would go into emergency lockdown.
