The Tempest I:ii-Epilogue Split Notes Retelling/summarizing & Reflecting

I:ii (a) Prospero & Miranda How are they on the island and why? Once Miranda falls asleep, retell/summarize individually on your paper (left side) (use complete sentences) and then share your summary. Reflect on the right and focus on what Prospero’s & Miranda’s relationship is like; what Prospero’s & Antonio’s relationship is like and whether it reflects a “natural” one; how power and control shapes both of these relationships

I.ii (b) Prospero, Ariel & Caliban Retell individually and then share your summary with your group. 1)Retell when you reach p. 81, line 305 and 2)Retell/reflect when you reach p.89, when Caliban exits. Reflect on the right and focus on the following: – How power and control shape relationships – Pgs. 85-89 retell of what Caliban speaks and reflect how this connects to colonization – Note the differences in the relationships among Prospero, Ariel, & Caliban – How do our judgments of the characters reflect our beliefs about what is natural, good, or malevolent in human nature (or in what is representative of human nature—Ariel, Caliban).

I.ii (c) Ferdinand, Miranda & Prospero Pgs.89-101 Here, focus on the control Prospero has over Ferdinand and how Prospero must respond to the power of love. Look at power and control in this triad, especially Prospero’s attempts to control his daughter and its relationship to power. Retell this part of the scene and reflect as indicated above.

Act II.i. (a) Your objective is to read all of Act II.i today and address the following: 1)Pages 103-top of 123: Retell this part of I.i and in your reflection noting the king’s attitude toward Gonzalo’s remarks and why he would have such an attitude. Also, retell with great detail Gonzalo’s speech of what he would have life to be like on the isle if he were the ruler on it. (His ideas directly reflect the idea held @ the time of a Utopia (a “perfect world”) on page 117, lines 139-152…Can the world he imagines exist? Why or why not?

Act II.i (b) 2) Read pages 123-135. As you read further, pay attention to how influential Antonio is over Sebastian, especially focusing on pages 129 & 131, lines 265-285. Retell this entire part of the scene but with great detail Antonio’s speech on the top of p.131. Address in your reflection related to the above: how power and control are at work here; If Antonio is “civilized” and Caliban is a “savage” how are these two different in their actions and how are they similar. Do the terms in quotation marks apply to each?

II.ii (c) Caliban, Trinculo, Stephano Read this entire act prior to your retell/reflection and afterwards, focus upon the following in your reflections: p. 139, 30-33: “When they will not give a doit (small coin) to relieve a lame beggar, they will lay out ten to see a dead Indian.” What does this say about our society then and now in regard to charity and entertainment. How are Trinculo and Stephano similarly motivated in regard to discovering Caliban or the monster, respectively? Remember Gonzalo’s Utopian speech and his want of not having persons who partake of wine or other alcohol. What are alcohol's effects here in terms of power and control? How is Shakespeare using alcohol like one would use the Bible and why do you think this is? Caliban swears off one master for another. Why does Caliban see this as “freedom”?

III.i Ferdinand, Miranda, Prospero Retell this scene. How does this scene undermine Prospero’s power? How does this scene relate to both the civilized world and the natural world? Why is Prospero amazed by watching these two and what do Miranda and Ferdinand decide. What is unusual about their decision, in terms of how it was decided?

III.ii (pages 163-176) After reading this scene, retell with specificity all that has happened—make sure you understand what they are plotting. Then for your reflections address the following: Why would Ariel defend Prospero through Trinculo? What do you think this reveals about their relationship? How do power and control shape these characters (Caliban, Trinculo, Stephano) relationships with one another and with their world? (Think about how the characters are interacting and their motivations for behavior.)

III.iii (a) (pgs. 177-187) Read this entire scene and retell with specificity especially Ariel’s monologue on page 183-185. Reflect on the following: Why do you think Prospero has Ariel perform such an act? What results does Prospero wish from this interchange? Do you feel Prospero is abusing his power over these persons? Why or why not?

Act III. iii (a) continued Retell with great detail pages 183-185 (Ariel is speaking and is in the form of a Harpie.) And then retell with detail Gonzalo’s remarks at the end of this scene on page 187. Reflect with regard to Ariel as the Harpie: what is the purpose of Ariel finally showing himself to the transgressors? What does this reveal about power and control in this play? Reflect with regard to Gonzalo’s remarks—How do our judgments affect how we perceive others, in this case Antonio, Sebastian and Alonso?

Act IV. I (a) First, retell quickly all that is occurring here for the sake of Ferdinand and Miranda and why—what is Prospero approving? – Reflect: How are power and control at work in this particular part (Ferdinand, Miranda & Prospero). What does it reflect about civility or savagery? Retell with great specificity Prospero’s speech on the bottom of 201 and top of 203. This particular passage is one that is quoted often. – Reflect: What is Shakespeare saying through Prospero about life. (This part is very existential—pertaining to existence and what it could mean. You may want to examine closely the footnotes on the left page.)

Act IV. I (b) (Caliban, Trinculo, Stephano) Retell this part of the scene with details. – Refect: How are power and control at work in this scenario…do you see Prospero as abusing his power? Why or why not?

Act V. I (a) (Ariel & Prospero) Retell this part of the scene (pages 215- 221)…be very specific as to what Ariel reports to Prospero and how Prospero is affected by Ariel’s words. Also, be sure to note what Prospero plans to do with his magic. – Reflect on the power of forgiveness and conjecture as to why Prospero has had a change of heart and now wants to forgive those who wronged him.

Act V. I (b) (Alonso, Prospero, and others) Retell the exchange between Alonso and Prospero and then between all other characters involved in this scene (pages 221-243). – Reflect on the interchange between Alonso and Prospero on page 227 where Prospero says he has lost his daughter and where Alonso responds on line 148 “A daughter? O heavens, that [Ferdinand and Miranda] were both living in Naples...” What literary element is this an example of? – Reflect on how power and control are still at work within these relationships…really examine it between Prospero and Alonso and Prospero and Antonio. How is forgiveness more powerful than revenge?

Epilogue (page 245) The epilogue is a direct address to the audience from one or more of the characters at the end of a performance. This epilogue in particular critics believe is Shakespeare’s parting words to his audience. Reflect on why people (critics) believe that Prospero is directly reflecting Shakespeare’s message to an audience. (Think about the presumption of The Tempest as Shakespeare’s last plays (or one of his last).)
