1 FINAL PROJECT Shelby LeVasseur CSC 101-03 Fall 2012 November 27 th, 2012- December 13 th, 2012

2 WEEK 7 AND 8 SOCIETAL TOPICS Week 7: Internet Regulation- Internet Regulation is the restriction of information we can and cannot see. IP address, domain registration, and censorship of data are just few of the things we are restricted to on the Internet. Many people today say it is against our First Amendment to the United States Constitution. The First Amendment states that we have the right to freedom of the press. Internet Governance- Internet Governance is different from Internet Regulation. This is because Internet Governance is not restricted by activities of any government. Such activities are legislation, development, technical standards, and much more. Internet Governance shapes the use of the Internet. Week 8: EdX- EdX is a website used for finding free courses from leading universities. Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are its founders. “EdX's goals combine the desire to reach out to students of all ages, means, and nations, and to deliver these teachings from a faculty who reflect the diversity of its audience (About EdX).” This enterprise is specifically for the use of learning through the web. Internet Protocol (IP) Addressing- Internet Protocol (IP) “is the principal communications protocol used for relaying datagrams (also known as network packets) across an internetwork using the Internet Protocol Suite responsible for routing packets across network boundaries (Internet Protocol).” It is used for addressing to be able to access a datagram source. It defines datagram structures, so the address can be delivered.s

3 WEEK 9 AND 10 SOCIETAL TOPICS Week 9: IPv6- IPv6 stands for Internet Protocol version 6. It is the newest version of Internet Protocol. It is a revision of Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4). IPv6 was created because IPv4 was running out of IP addresses. This new version has helped internet traffic tremendously. Other countries since June 6 th, 2012 have been adopting IPv6. Net Neutrality- Net Neutrality is also known as Internet Neutrality. Net Neutrality prevents internet users from being restricted from websites, programs, ways of communicating, and much more. To summarize their goal, Net Neutrality tries to make all Internet traffic treated equally. Their job helps us to not come in contact with blocked sites. Week 10: Windows 8- Windows 8, produced by Microsoft, is the current operating system for desktops and laptops. There are significant changes since the previous system, Windows 7. The primary focus for this new operating system is to make it mobile device friendly. The appearance of Windows 8 also has a very noticeable difference. The Start screen has a grid instead of a list menu on mobile devices. Routing Autonomous Systems- “Autonomous Systems (AS) is a collection of connected Internet Protocol (IP) routing prefixes under the control of one or more network operators that presents a common, clearly defined routing policy to the Internet (Autonomous System (Internet)).” There are many Autonomous Systems supported by the Internet Service Provider (ISP), but the Internet only sees the routing policy.

4 WEEK 11, 12 & 13 SOCIETAL TOPICS Week 11: Privacy and Border Protocol- BGP, also known as Border Gateway Protocol, is used within Internet Service Providers (ISPs). It is an exterior gateway routing protocol (EGP). This means it allows routers to share information with other router groups. Loop-free routes are created by this. Week 12: Spam- Spam is commonly found in your e-mail under bulk messages. This is also known as “junk mail.” These messages consist of advertisements. Spam can also be found in instant messaging, your mobile device, blogs, online classified ads, and even on television. These unsolicited messages are extremely annoying in our day-to-day life. MOOC- MOOC is an abbreviation for Massive Open Online Course. MOOC is a type of open education. It is an online course opened to all at the university/college level. Although MOOC does not offer credits to students, “assessment of learning may be done for certification.” However, students are still receiving an education.
