Pg 12 RTW: Approximately half of the world’s catch of fish is made up of five kinds of fish, what do you think they are? Objective: Review what science means, and an introduction to marine science. Agenda: ▫Power point on intro. to marine science/why to study it. ▫Now you dive in and learn a bit more! Homework: ▫None

Did You Know? Approximately half of the world’s catch of fish is made up of five kinds of fish: herring, cod, jack, tuna, and mackerel. Herring is the world’s most popular fish- at least when it comes to eating.

What Is Marine Science? Marine Science – the process of discovering the facts, and unifying principles that explain the nature of the oceans and their associated life forms

Marine Science ▫SONAR is a system using transmitted and reflected underwater sound waves to detect and locate submerged objects or measure the distance to the floor of a body of water. ▫The most famous shipwreck to date located with Klein side scan sonar has been the Titanic, found in 1985.

The Process of Science What is Science? Scientia (Latin) – meaning knowledge Science is a way of knowing based on testable claims supported by… Observation and Experimentation knowledge gained in this way is called Empirical Knowledge

The Process of Science What is NOT science? ▫Non-science is any knowledge that cannot be verified empirically (obs. & exp.)  Feeling, emotion, authority, religion ▫Pseudoscience is any knowledge that claims to be scientific but is NOT verifiable by process of science.  Astrology, numerology, etc.

Why Study Marine Science? What are three general reasons to study Marine Science?

Why Study Marine Science? Explaining the Natural World ▫Marine Science can help you to understand how the oceans play a vital role in our world. Oil FoodWeather and Climate Patterns

Why Study Marine Science? Preparing For a Career ▫Many sciences, professions, and careers draw on basic marine science. These disciplines include: atmospheric science, astronomy, ecology, biomedical research, environmental science, etc.

Why Study Marine Science? Being an Informed Citizen ▫Knowledge of marine science and other sciences can help you evaluate the data presented, arrive at an informed opinion, and take appropriate action.

The Process of Science ASKING QUESTIONS FINDING ANSWERS What is Science?

S.T.A.R (copy in ISN) ▫1.Marine Science is the study of ___________ and its associated life forms.  the sea floor  space  matter  the ocean

S.T.A.R (copy in ISN) ▫2. Informed citizens are most likely to  provide funds for scientific research.  determine which areas of research are valid.  decide who is qualified to do research.  make decisions for a better society.

S.T.A.R (copy in ISN) ▫3.What is one reason to study marine science?  to pass the test  you need it before driver’s ed  to win at marine science jeopardy  to explain the natural world around you

S.T.A.R (copy in ISN) ▫4.Knowledge would NOT be considered scientific knowledge if…  it’s based on experimental data  it’s theoretical  it’s not empirically testable  it’s easy to understand

Your assignment Please do these questions now Pg. 1-3 question 5 Pg. 1-8 questions 2,3,4,5,7,8,10 Please turn in as much as you finish at the end of class, I will give them back on Friday to finish up before you begin designing your lab.
